John Lewis Christmas Ad Unveils Heartfelt Father Son Story with 90s Hit
As November unfolds and the festive season countdown commences in earnest, a significant pre-Christmas event has once again captured public attention: John Lewis has unveiled its much-anticipated Christmas advertisement. This year's campaign, titled ‘Where Love Lives’, carries the poignant tagline: “If you can’t find the words, find the gift.”
The soundtrack for this year's emotional journey is a newly reimagined version of 90s dance icon Alison Limerick’s hit ‘Where Love Lives’, expertly crafted by artist and producer Labrinth. In a move that adds a charitable dimension to the campaign, John Lewis is selling this special rendition via a charity vinyl record, allowing viewers to not only enjoy the music but also contribute to a good cause.
The advertisement itself centers on a touching narrative between a teenage son and his father. The son, struggling to articulate his deep feelings for his dad, finds solace and expression through the power of music. The story culminates with the campaign’s core message: “If you can’t find the words, find the gift.” Created by Saatchi & Saatchi, the ad opens on Christmas Day within a family household. The scene initially focuses on the Dad, diligently clearing discarded wrapping paper, as his son remains engrossed in his own world with headphones on.
The narrative then shifts as the Dad discovers an unopened gift marked ‘Dad’ with a cheerful smiley face. Inside, he finds a vinyl record of Alison Limerick’s ‘Where Love Lives’. The potent nostalgia evoked by the music instantly transports him back to the 1990s, an era he fondly remembers and cherishes. This embrace of nostalgia is a recurring theme in recent John Lewis campaigns, often reflecting on the brand's own history or the cherished memories of its customers. In this particular ad, viewers are taken on the Dad’s immersive journey, as he loses himself in the music within a vibrant 90s club. Remarkably, he sees his son not only as a teenager in this vision but also as a toddler and even a newborn, emphasizing the profound connection and the passage of time.
The music, in this context, “becomes a bridge between memory and love, between then and now,” beautifully connecting different stages of their relationship. Back in the present, his son descends the stairs and finds his father enjoying the gift. A quiet, unspoken moment of understanding and affection passes between them as they share an embrace, the music having successfully conveyed what words could not.
Rosie Hanley, Director of Brand for John Lewis, articulated the campaign’s essence, stating: “This year’s John Lewis Christmas campaign is a celebration of connection, memory, and the unspoken emotions that make the season truly magical.” Franki Goodwin, Chief Creative Officer at Saatchi & Saatchi, further elaborated on the musical core, noting: “Music is always the beating heart of the John Lewis campaign at Christmas but this year it’s the gift itself. The track threads through an integrated campaign that poignantly explores the power of a gift to communicate something we might not be able to put into words.”
Beyond the evocative advertisement, John Lewis is actively enhancing its overall festive season offerings and engagement with customers. A notable new initiative includes the opening of a Members’ Lounge at its flagship Oxford Street, London, store. This exclusive VIP space is designed for loyalty scheme members, offering complimentary drinks and snacks, alongside mini massages, providing a luxurious respite during busy Christmas shopping.
This "new, premium, service-led reward" is being tested to ensure the brand’s most “loyal members feel valued,” a strategy that comes amidst a significant 13% growth in loyalty scheme membership over the past year. My John Lewis scheme members can pre-book slots for the lounge, though walk-ins are also accommodated if space allows, and they are welcome to bring up to two guests.
