John Lewis Launches First Circular Knitwear Collection From Recycled Wool
John Lewis has taken a significant stride in sustainable fashion with the launch of its pioneering circular unisex knitwear collection. Spearheaded by its innovative Closed Loop Initiative, this new range is entirely crafted from reclaimed and repurposed wool, marking a notable commitment to environmental responsibility within the retail sector. This collection not only showcases expert craftsmanship but also champions a fully circular production model, transforming pre-loved textiles into brand-new, desirable garments.
The distinctive 19-piece collection is a vibrant testament to circular design. It comprises five unique jumper designs, a stylish striped rib beanie available in three appealing colourways, and a cozy knitted scarf. Every single item in the range is made from 100% recycled wool, meticulously sourced from customer donations through John Lewis’s own FashionCycle programme, alongside contributions from other UK-based textile take-back schemes. This dedication to local sourcing is further reinforced by the fact that all garments are converted into new pieces using exclusively UK manufacturers, bolstering domestic industry and reducing carbon footprints.
Central to this initiative is the collaboration with iinouiio, a leading British wool recycler. Together, the Closed Loop Initiative has pushed the boundaries of design and craftsmanship, achieving an impressive array of statement colours without the need for re-dyeing the wool. This process significantly conserves water and energy. Furthermore, the garments are seamlessly knitted on specialist circular machines, a technique that drastically reduces production waste. Each piece is also thoughtfully designed for ultimate recyclability at its end-of-life, ensuring that the environmental impact of the product is minimized throughout its entire lifecycle.
Affordability meets sustainability in this groundbreaking collection, with prices ranging from £49 for a beanie to £199 for the intricate Fairisle Crew Jumper. Adding a personal touch and emphasizing the unique nature of each garment, every piece in the collection is individually numbered by hand. This meticulous attention to detail underscores the value placed on craft and the distinct journey of each item from donation to new creation.
Megan Lovesey, John Lewis Knitwear buyer, expressed her enthusiasm for the collection, stating, “We believe [this] is a first among major UK high street retailers, combining expert craftsmanship with customer donations to create a collection that continues our circular journey.” She further highlighted the anticipated appeal to customers, not only for the environmental benefits but also for the “carefully considered and playful design of each piece.” Lovesey affirmed John Lewis’s ongoing commitment, noting, “This collection is not only kind to our planet but one that champions great British manufacture and craft, which we aim to continue supporting in the future.”
Through this innovative circular knitwear collection, John Lewis reinforces its position as a leader in responsible retail. By integrating customer donations into a closed-loop manufacturing process, the brand is not only offering stylish and high-quality garments but also actively contributing to a more sustainable future for fashion, all while celebrating and supporting British craftsmanship.
