Kaotiko BCN Embraces European Expansion with French Market Focus

Spanish label Kaotiko BCN is significantly expanding its European footprint, with a recent focus on the French market. The brand, which blends Barcelona streetwear aesthetics with ambitious fashion sensibilities, marked its intensified French presence with an event in early September at Paris’s Aujourd'hui-Demain boutique restaurant. This strategic move follows Kaotiko’s presentation of its autumn-winter collection at the Who's Next trade show earlier this year.

The brand aims to carve out a distinct niche, positioning itself as a Mediterranean-infused alternative to established players like Carhartt WIP. Germán Bernad, Kaotiko’s managing director, highlights the strong connection between Barcelona and skateboarding, noting that this positive energy resonates well with French culture, leading to a favorable reception for their collections. Kaotiko has already secured around 60 points of sale in France, a network poised for rapid growth as Simon Leroy, the brand's representative in France, has assembled a dedicated team for the market this year, marking a new chapter for the quarter-century-old label.

Kaotiko’s journey began in 1999 as a multi-brand store specializing in skateboarding and surfing, founded by Katia Vilaginés and Ángel Palacios in Barcelona. The founders soon began introducing their own designs, with Katia Vilaginés leading the creation of T-shirts and sweatshirts. This concept quickly gained traction, leading to the opening of additional stores across Barcelona. The brand also built a strong reputation for local production, with 90% of its T-shirts manufactured just a few kilometers from the Catalan capital, reinforcing its authentic identity.

To facilitate further expansion, the founders partnered with Alicante-based Estudio 2000, bringing them on board as shareholders. Germán Bernad explains that the founders had been looking to develop their concept beyond Barcelona about ten years ago, and seeing an opportunity, the Bernad family, who had a history distributing Puma in Spain, acquired a majority stake in 2018.

Following this acquisition, Kaotiko continued to expand its retail footprint while simultaneously exploring wholesale distribution to other retailers, structuring its offerings into seasonal collections. Bernad recalls their initial participation in the Bright skate show in Berlin, where they secured their first clients and established early contacts with major platforms like Zalando. Despite signing German retailers in its inaugural season, wholesale sales remained a minor contributor for several years, with the brand's network of approximately a dozen stores across Spain driving the majority of its €12 million revenue in 2021.

However, the brand faced evolving market dynamics, including declining store traffic and the emergence of new brands highly proficient in digital marketing and community engagement. Recognizing these shifts, Kaotiko made a strategic pivot. Bernad explains, "Retail has become complicated, less reliable... We decided to close stores and invest in developing the wholesale business. We reduced revenue but focused on profitability." This decision allowed them to adapt to a changing retail landscape that increasingly favored brands skilled in digital communication and event organization, areas where Kaotiko preferred to emphasize styling and design.

In line with its focus on the multi-brand channel, Kaotiko has diversified its product offering over the past three years, introducing footwear and expanding its sourcing to include Portugal and Asia for items like long-sleeved pieces. The brand now releases two drops per season and has introduced more fashion-forward capsules, such as "musical themes" or "Café Lover," featuring cuts tailored for retailers targeting a 30- to 45-year-old demographic. There's also an increased emphasis on womenswear silhouettes, which are proving attractive to retailers, according to the brand's French agents.

Today, Kaotiko operates just four flagship stores in Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, which now primarily serve as brand showcases. Concurrently, the brand is experiencing robust international expansion through distributors in South Korea, Germany, Italy, and France, bringing its global presence to approximately 500 points of sale. The company anticipates achieving €7 million in sales in 2025 and is targeting further growth in 2026, aiming for around 100 retailers in the French market alone. While Spain currently remains its primary sales driver, ongoing international developments, including discussions about expansion into Latin America, are projected to push the international share of sales beyond 50% as early as 2026.
