Kaws Named Uniqlo's First Artist in Residence to Amplify Art for All
Global apparel giant Uniqlo has officially named Kaws, the renowned contemporary artist celebrated for his distinctive style that cleverly reinterprets pop culture, as its inaugural Artist in Residence. This significant appointment underscores Uniqlo's unwavering commitment to its "Art For All" philosophy, aiming to make art accessible and enjoyable for a global audience.
In his groundbreaking new capacity, Kaws will spearhead a diverse array of initiatives designed to further Uniqlo’s artistic mission. These responsibilities include organizing engaging art events at key Uniqlo flagship stores across the globe and fostering collaborations with the brand’s esteemed museum partners. Crucially, Kaws will also play an instrumental role in shaping the future of Uniqlo’s innovative LifeWear products, with the eagerly anticipated first collection under his guidance slated for a Fall/Winter 2025 debut. Furthermore, his expertise will extend to active participation in the prestigious UT Grand Prix competitions, influencing the next generation of creative T-shirt designs.
Reflecting on the profound significance of this partnership, John C. Jay, President of Global Creative for Fast Retailing, emphasized, "In our ever-evolving world, art is now more important than ever as an expression of our humanity. Kaws has been breaking the traditional boundaries of the art world, just as Uniqlo in its efforts to redefine the apparel industry through LifeWear." He added that as Uniqlo’s Artist in Residence, Kaws is expected to "help Uniqlo to expand the global appreciation and participation of art and creativity for all," solidifying the brand’s dedication to making art an integral part of everyday life.
This momentous appointment is a natural progression of a highly successful, nearly decade-long partnership between Uniqlo and Kaws, which has consistently captivated audiences and generated some of the brand’s most sought-after UT (Uniqlo T-shirt) collections. Their collaborative journey began in 2016, leading to iconic joint projects such as partnerships with beloved franchises like Peanuts in 2017 and Sesame Street in 2018. Memorable releases also include the special Kaws: Summer collection in 2019, the Kaws Tokyo First collection in 2021, and the recent Kaws + Warhol drop in 2024, each demonstrating a unique blend of art and fashion.
Expressing his enthusiasm for this new chapter, Kaws stated, "I am thrilled to be taking this next step with my longtime partner Uniqlo to become the brand's first artist in residence. In this role, I hope to tap into the art community and global creatives to curate the next generation of Uniqlo collaborators." He further shared his excitement about "working on exciting new kinds of LifeWear," hinting at innovative future creations that will blend his artistic vision with Uniqlo’s functional yet stylish apparel.
