Kering Invests in China's Future Fashion Leaders with New Global Talent Program
Kering, one of the world's leading luxury groups, has launched an innovative program in China called Kering Craft. Developed in collaboration with Shanghai’s key designer council, the initiative aims to identify and nurture promising local talent within China's dynamic fashion landscape. CRAFT, which stands for Creative Residency for Artisanship, Fashion and Technology, is designed to empower emerging Chinese designers by providing unparalleled opportunities for growth and global exposure.
The core of the Kering Craft program is a meticulously curated, cross-continental residency experience. Hand-picked by an international jury of industry leaders and experts, selected talents will embark on an immersive journey spanning Milan, Paris, and Shanghai. This unique residency combines hands-on artisanship with cutting-edge design and essential business insights, fostering critical dialogue around creativity, craftsmanship, and the future trajectory of luxury. The ultimate goal is to equip Chinese designers with robust brand and business capabilities, encouraging the development of "glocal" brands – local Chinese houses with the potential to scale globally and forge synergies with Kering’s prestigious portfolio of Houses.
Luca de Meo, who joined Kering as CEO in June, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative. "China is one of the world’s most dynamic innovation hubs, impressing with its remarkable creativity and speed. This vibrant creative energy perfectly aligns with Kering’s vision," he stated. De Meo further added, "As we partner with Shanghai Fashion Week in this groundbreaking initiative, we are honoured to play an active role in fostering international exchange in business, culture and innovation."
Kering, recognized as the world’s second-largest luxury group, oversees an impressive collection of powerhouse brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, and Brioni, alongside jewelry houses like Boucheron and Qeelin. The announcement of the Kering Craft program took place during the unveiling ceremony of the Kering Pavilion at the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE), marking a significant milestone in the group’s deepening commitment to China's fashion and creative industries.
Ji Shengjun, Director of the Shanghai Fashion Week Organizing Committee, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. "Guided by the philosophy of ‘integration of local and international visions,’ we are proud to collaborate with Kering to nurture emerging talent in China’s fashion and creative industries," said Shengjun. He further elaborated, "Together, we aim to build a platform that empowers local designers to engage globally, spark creativity, and strengthen brand-building capabilities—expanding the fashion ecosystem." Shanghai Fashion Week itself has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades, evolving from a modest runway showcase into Asia's leading fashion event.
Kering’s deep-rooted presence in China underscores its strategic focus on the region. The group currently boasts an estimated 6,000 staff members and operates more than 400 stores across 40 Chinese cities, representing almost a quarter of its global retail network. Notably, half of Kering's stores in China have opened within the last decade, and five of the company's top 10 cities in terms of global sales are located in China, highlighting the country's critical role in Kering's global success.
