La Perla Workers Rehired Securing Iconic Brand's Future
In a significant development for the renowned Italian luxury lingerie brand La Perla, all its employees are set to be rehired by La Perla Atelier, a company now under the control of Luxury Holding. This holding company is owned by American billionaire and former Expedia CEO, Peter Kern. The signing of the final contracts marks a triumphant return for the 'Le Perline' – as the workers are affectionately known – to the company’s historic luxury lingerie facility in Bologna, Italy. This positive outcome was formally announced through a joint statement issued by Filctem-Cgil Bologna and Uiltec-Uil Emilia-Romagna and Bologna.
This resolution brings to a close a protracted and challenging dispute that spanned over two years, a period characterized by immense uncertainty and considerable sacrifice for the workforce. As highlighted by the unions, the struggle to save La Perla involved extensive negotiations and advocacy, traversing various levels from national ministries and institutional chambers to the European Parliament in Brussels. The journey underscores the tenacity and unwavering spirit of the employees who fought for their livelihoods.
The unions, Filctem and Uiltec, lauded the workers' resilience, stating that they "have defended not only their jobs but the dignity of an ancient, irreplaceable craft." They further emphasized La Perla’s role as a counter-example within the broader fashion industry. In an era where the supply chain is often "marred by cases of exploitation and irregular work," La Perla's resolution "shows that quality can be achieved while respecting people, rights, and wages," setting a benchmark for ethical production.
With the contracts now signed, the focus shifts to a crucial relaunch phase for the iconic brand. The unions expressed their confidence in the future, concluding that "The new group inherits unique human capital, capable of creating value with every single seam." They extended their gratitude to the dedicated workforce and the various institutions that provided support throughout the arduous dispute, acknowledging the collective effort that led to this successful outcome.
The sentiment of overcoming an "impossible" challenge was echoed by the government. In a statement, the Minister for Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, commented on the conclusion of the Bologna-based lingerie manufacturer’s saga, asserting that the government has "honoured every commitment." Minister Urso noted, "The signing of the contracts and the return to the company of all La Perla workers bring to a close a long and complex dispute, which Mimit has followed from the very first moment with great care and a sense of responsibility. We have honoured every commitment, bringing to fruition a battle that seemed impossible and restoring an industrial and employment future to this global icon of Made in Italy fashion."
