Lenskart IPO opens to strong demand, aiming for $821 million to fuel expansion

Lenskart Solutions Ltd., the prominent eyewear retailer, has officially commenced taking public orders for its anticipated Initial Public Offering (IPO). The offering aims to raise a substantial sum of up to 72.8 billion rupees, equivalent to approximately $821 million, signaling a vibrant period in India's new listings market. Founded by Indian "Shark Tank" judge Peyush Bansal, the company has set its share price between 382 rupees and 402 rupees, with the subscription window closing on Tuesday. Trading for the shares is scheduled to begin on November 10, valuing Lenskart at as much as 700 billion rupees upon listing.

Lenskart's move to go public coincides with a significant surge in IPO activity across India, which has emerged as one of the world's most dynamic markets for new listings. This bullish trend is largely fueled by robust capital inflows from domestic mutual funds, insurance companies, and a growing base of millions of retail investors. The timing also places Lenskart alongside other major market events, such as Billionbrains Garage Ventures Ltd., the parent company of the online investment platform Groww, which is also preparing to launch its own IPO on Tuesday, potentially raising up to 66.3 billion rupees.

The valuation of Lenskart's IPO has drawn attention, particularly with its pricing at 10 times last fiscal year’s enterprise value to sales. This metric led SBI Securities Co. to express caution, noting that the valuation "seems stretched." However, not all analysts share this reserved outlook. Nirmal Bang Securities Pvt., for instance, has advised clients to purchase the stock with a long-term investment horizon, stating that "Future expansion plans and growth prospects provide cushion to the valuations," indicating confidence in the company's future trajectory.

In terms of capital structure, Lenskart plans to raise 21.5 billion rupees through the issuance of new shares, while existing investors are poised to offer up to 127.6 million shares. A notable pre-IPO development saw the company successfully raise 32.7 billion rupees from 147 anchor investors. This impressive roster of anchor investors includes major global financial institutions such as funds managed by JPMorgan Chase & Co., BlackRock Inc., and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., underscoring significant institutional confidence in Lenskart's market potential.

Established in 2010, Lenskart boasts a strong backing from a diverse group of prominent investors, including the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, KKR & Co., and TPG Inc., reflecting its journey of growth and innovation in the eyewear sector. The robust performance of Lenskart's IPO is also indicative of the broader health of the Indian IPO market. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, India is projected to be the world’s fourth-largest IPO market with nearly $16 billion in proceeds by 2025, following a record-setting tally of $21 billion in the previous year.
