Comments on Louboutin's Instagram echoed frustration, with one post lamenting that "90 percent of opportunities go straight to celebrity kids or famous names" in an industry already tough to break into for "real talent." Smith is frequently labeled a "nepo baby," a term also applied to the children of other famous personalities such as Johnny Depp, Lenny Kravitz, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Yet, some, like Stella McCartney, daughter of Paul McCartney, have successfully defied such labels, establishing highly respected and successful eponymous fashion brands. The Business of Fashion publication speculated that Louboutin, who is approaching retirement age, might be looking towards the future with this decision, viewing it as a strategic "first step toward succession" by bringing in a new creative director for the men's category.
