Louvre Jewel Heist Gang Complete As Fourth Suspect Charged
France has formally charged the fourth and final alleged member of a four-person gang believed to be responsible for last month's spectacular jewel heist at the Louvre Museum. This recent development brings all four primary suspects involved in the audacious robbery into custody and under formal accusation, according to prosecutors.
The high-profile heist took place on October 19, when the gang targeted the world's most-visited art museum in broad daylight. The operation was executed with remarkable speed, taking only seven minutes to steal an estimated $102 million worth of jewelry before the culprits fled the scene on scooters. The specific target of the theft was the prestigious Apollo Gallery.
The fourth suspect to be charged is a 39-year-old man, apprehended on Tuesday at a construction site located in the western French town of Laval. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau provided details on his background, stating that the man was born in the working-class Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis. Beccuau further noted his extensive criminal history, having been "already convicted six times" for a range of offenses including pimping, driving without a license, and receiving stolen goods.
With this latest arrest and charge, all four individuals suspected of having directly carried out the robbery are now behind bars. The other suspects previously arrested include men aged 35, 37, and another 39-year-old. Investigators believe two of the team members entered the Apollo Gallery, while the other two remained outside, facilitating their subsequent escape together. All four have been charged with organised theft and criminal conspiracy, although the vast sum of stolen jewelry remains missing.
Beyond the core four-person team, authorities also took into custody a 38-year-old woman, identified as the partner of one of the arrested men. She is suspected of complicity in the crime. However, following questioning, she has since been released on bail as the investigation continues to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and the crucial whereabouts of the high-value stolen items.
