Luxury Fashion Brands Unite to Accelerate Green Supply Chains in Europe
The European Accelerator represents a significant new initiative launched by The Fashion Pact, a non-profit organization established in 2019 with a core mission to advance sustainability within the global fashion industry. This collaborative effort brings together some of the most influential names in luxury fashion, including Chanel, Ermenegildo Zegna, Kering, Moncler, and Prada. Its primary objective is to foster collective action, beginning in Italy, to drive the decarbonisation of the entire fashion supply chain.
The urgency for such an initiative is underscored by critical challenges facing the European fashion sector. Estimates suggest that the industry will need to channel approximately €4.4 billion into investments by 2030 to successfully meet its ambitious decarbonisation targets. However, in Italy, a country central to luxury product manufacturing, a substantial hurdle exists: around 58% of suppliers face economic pressures, such as high debt levels, which render such crucial investments financially unsustainable. Compounding this issue is a prevalent lack of shared standards in sustainability reporting, making it exceedingly difficult to accurately gather and compare data on manufacturers' environmental performance.
To address these complexities, The European Accelerator is structured around three interconnected work streams. The first stream focuses on establishing a robust framework for data collection and harmonisation. Participating brands are actively involved in defining a comprehensive questionnaire designed to gather essential data on energy usage, water consumption, and waste generation. This questionnaire has already undergone a rigorous six-week testing period with a diverse group of 74 Italian suppliers, encompassing finished goods manufacturers, tanneries, and producers of fabrics, yarns, and accessories.
Further enhancing its efficacy, the questionnaire incorporates valuable suggestions from CNMI, the Italian Fashion Chamber, and was developed in close collaboration with Quantis, a respected environmental consultancy firm owned by the BCG group. It is made available to all fashion labels on a voluntary and non-exclusive basis, with the ultimate goal of encouraging a growing number of brands to adopt and utilise harmonised sustainability reporting metrics. This crucial tool has already been embraced by several producers and is slated for progressive extension throughout the supply chain. An expert committee will ensure its continuous alignment with the latest sector legislation and best practices through regular updates.
The second key work stream of The Accelerator is dedicated to fostering operational improvements and efficiency within the supply chain. This involves a concerted effort to boost manufacturers' skills, identify opportunities for greater efficiency in production processes, and actively promote the wider uptake of renewable energy sources. By enhancing capabilities and encouraging cleaner energy adoption, the initiative aims to reduce the environmental footprint of production significantly.
Finally, the third work stream directly tackles the significant barrier of access to finance, which continues to impede progress in sustainable transformation. Recognising this challenge, The Accelerator is committed to creating new opportunities designed to enable suppliers to access the vital capital needed. This financial support will empower them to invest in cleaner technologies, implement sustainable practices, and ultimately support their long-term transition towards a more environmentally responsible future.
