Manolo Blahnik Transforms Burlington Arcade into Versailles for Marie Antoinette Collection
London's historic Burlington Arcade has been dramatically reimagined as "Le Palais du Burlington Arcade," currently featuring a spectacular installation curated by luxury footwear designer Manolo Blahnik. This transformation offers a lavish celebration of Marie Antoinette, immersing visitors in an opulent experience that mirrors the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles.
This elaborate installation marks the highly anticipated launch of the Marie Antoinette by Manolo Blahnik Capsule Collection. Designed to create a unique and immersive journey, it perfectly complements Manolo Blahnik's ongoing collaboration with the V&A, where the esteemed brand is sponsoring the landmark "Marie Antoinette Style" exhibition. The entire spectacle aims to intertwine fashion, history, and art in a truly captivating manner.
The vision behind "Le Palais du Burlington Arcade" was to transport the sheer magnificence of Versailles directly into the heart of Mayfair, often dubbed the 'Jewel of Mayfair.' This has been achieved through an exquisite array of design elements, including glistening crystal chandeliers, bespoke carpets crafted specifically for the space, and intricate hand-drawn illustrations, all culminating in a theatrical and deeply immersive celebration of artistry, heritage, and timeless beauty.
At the heart of the transformation is a striking 180-yard carpet, personally designed by Manolo Blahnik himself, which unfurls majestically across the entire length of the arcade. Adorned with delicate rosebud motifs and a distinctive square panel pattern that draws inspiration from the iconic parquet flooring of Versailles, this carpet is further enriched with subtle overlays of capsule sketches, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into Blahnik's celebrated design process.
Enhancing the visual impact are 21 individually lit and programmed crystal chandeliers, strategically placed to cast a dazzling glow throughout the arcade. These luminous fixtures brilliantly illuminate 84 meticulously hand-rendered illustrations, showcasing five distinct capsule shoe designs, each presented in beautifully arranged sculptural clusters, adding another layer of artistic depth to the installation.
Despite Manolo Blahnik's brand being closely associated with the centuries-old arcade today, its physical presence there spans just under a decade. Nevertheless, Blahnik possesses an intimate understanding of the space's unique architectural nuances. The installation has been meticulously crafted to sweep through the arcade with a profound sense of 18th-century theatrical grandeur, ensuring every corner is embellished with sumptuous drama and historical resonance.
The exquisite limited-edition Marie Antoinette by Manolo Blahnik Capsule Collection is available exclusively at the Manolo Blahnik Burlington Arcade Mayfair Townhouse and through the brand's online platform. Enthusiasts wishing to experience "Le Palais du Burlington Arcade" should note that the installation will remain open to the public until early November.
