Martin Parr iconic British photographer known for his vibrant and ironic gaze dies at 73

British photographer Martin Parr, renowned for his signature colour-saturated photographs and the ironic gaze with which he captured the daily life of his compatriots, passed away on Saturday at the age of 73. The announcement was made by the Martin Parr Foundation in a press release. "It is with great sadness that we announce that Martin Parr (1952-2025) died on December 6, 2025, at home in Bristol," the foundation stated. Magnum Photos, the agency with which Parr was long associated, confirmed the news simultaneously.

Parr achieved fame through a highly recognisable aesthetic defined by close-up shots and a saturated palette. He applied an amused and sympathetic eye to his favourite themes, including mass tourism and consumerism, and to his subjects, ranging from sunbathers with crimson skin to participants at village fêtes. His unique documentary-style work, often described as kitsch, garnered him as many admirers as detractors, but his influence extended far beyond photography aficionados.

Born in Surrey on May 23, 1952, Parr was introduced to photography by his grandfather, an enthusiast himself. He began his career taking black and white pictures, in keeping with the styles favoured by the great masters of the 1970s. He rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with "The Last Resort," a study of working-class people on holiday in New Brighton in Merseyside. This seminal project foreshadowed his future work, notably introducing the use of flash photography for exterior shots.

Over the last three decades, Parr's distinctive style garnered attention from the fashion industry. He collaborated with various luxury houses, and his work with fashion labels was documented in the book "Fashion Faux Parr," published last year. The book featured 25 images taken throughout several decades, tracing his links with the fashion world.

Following a career fraught with challenges, Parr became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1994, despite initial opposition from Henri Cartier-Bresson. He went on to lead the agency from 2013 to 2017, solidifying his legacy within one of the world's most prestigious photographic institutions.
