Masaba Gupta Showcases Indian Heritage Style at Miami Art Week Debut
Eponymous designer Masaba Gupta debuted a vibrant 20-piece capsule collection in Florida, US during Miami Art Week. The showcase aimed to introduce her global-facing interpretation of "desi heritage style" to an international audience through the ‘Art from the eye of India’ event. "India has been my biggest source of inspiration, and I carry India on my sleeve, now more than ever as we make our debut at Art Basel, Miami," stated founder and chief design officer Masaba Gupta in a press release. She added that what began as a dream to create designs centered on print and kitsch has evolved into one of the most recognized Indian brands, encompassing fine jewelry, luxury bridal fashion, and other categories.
Gupta presented both clothing and fine jewelry in the showcase titled ‘Ghee-Shakkar,’ a phrase derived from clarified butter and sugar. This name symbolizes auspicious beginnings and abundance, reflecting the collection's theme of celebratory opulence. The designs featured intricate embroidery, iridescent textiles, and fusion silhouettes that combined traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. This approach offered wearable opulence and presented a playful, joyous take on India’s rich aesthetic traditions to a global audience.
"The narrative unfolds in black and white as much as it does in bursts of colour, finally culminating into a magnificent hot pink gulal," Gupta explained, describing the collection's color palette and journey. The garments' motifs were deeply steeped in culture, drawing inspiration from cosmic patterns, ancient cityscapes, and the textures of an India that remains both timeless and ever evolving. The collection sought to bridge the gap between historical craft and modern design through a visually rich narrative.
The ‘Art from the eye of India’ event, where Gupta’s collection was featured, offered visitors an immersive experience into Indian art, culture, and heritage. A curated selection of her womenswear designs was complemented by the poetry of Rupi Kaur. The event also served as a platform for cultural exchange, featuring guest speakers such as Rajiv Menon, who showcased his work at Art Basel, and Angelle Le Siyang, Art Basel Asia representative. Through her participation during Miami Design Week, which ran from December 1 to 7, Gupta sought to celebrate Indian culture and establish meaningful international connections across the industries of art and fashion.
