Mellon Blue Diamond Fetches $25.6 Million Amid Cautious Market

The illustrious Mellon Blue diamond, a magnificent 9.51-carat fancy vivid blue gem with a distinguished provenance, recently commanded $25.6 million at auction in Geneva. This significant sale highlights the enduring appeal of extraordinary jewels among an elite collector base, even amidst a cautious market environment. The diamond, formerly part of the extensive collection of the renowned US art collector Bunny Mellon, was a star attraction at Christie's Magnificent Jewels sale.

The auction, conducted by Christie's in Geneva, saw The Mellon Blue achieve a final price of 20,525,000 Swiss francs at the opulent Hotel des Bergues. This figure comfortably fell within its pre-sale estimate range of 16 to 24 million francs. Rahul Kadakia, who presided over the sale, noted that the impressive price underscored "the elite appetite amongst collectors for extraordinary and storied gems," reinforcing the market's strong demand for pieces with exceptional history and quality.

This brilliant-cut stone, graded as internally flawless, possesses a remarkable history, once gracing the collection of Rachel Lambert Mellon, widely known as Bunny Mellon. A celebrated US horticulturalist, philanthropist, and art collector, Mellon's ownership further cemented the diamond's prestigious lineage. Max Fawcett, head of jewellery at Christie's in Geneva, described The Mellon Blue as an "outstanding stone," adding that it had transcended its intrinsic value to become "symbolic of a lifestyle of a bygone era — the type only possible with a Gilded Age fortune." The diamond, set in a captivating serpentine ring, was last publicly seen and auctioned in 2014 following Mellon's passing at 103, where it fetched over $32 million in New York.

Despite its strong showing, not all market observers were entirely surprised by the final price. Tobias Kormind, managing director of Europe's largest online diamond jeweller 77 Diamonds, expressed an expectation for the gem to have sold for an even higher amount. Kormind attributed the somewhat subdued atmosphere to prevailing "geopolitical tensions... and a weakened Chinese economy that kept many usual buyers away, left the room distinctly cautious." He also questioned whether this restraint would be a trend for the remainder of the Geneva auction season.

The auction season continues with other notable sales, as Sotheby's prepares for its annual Royal and Noble Jewels sale in Geneva. Among the historical treasures slated for auction is a unique brooch, valued at $150,000 to $250,000, which was seized from Napoleon Bonaparte as he fled the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, adorned with old mine-cut diamonds. Additionally, "The Glowing Rose," an exceptional 10.08-carat vivid pink diamond, is anticipated to garner around $20 million. Sotheby's highlighted the gem's "exceptional quality" and its "extremely rare" luminous and pure pink colour as defining features, promising further excitement in the high-stakes world of fine jewellery auctions.
