Meta Eyes London's Oxford Street for First Permanent Retail Store

Social media giant Meta is reportedly planning to establish its first permanent physical retail store in London, a strategic move aimed at significantly boosting interest in its virtual reality (VR) headsets and smart glasses. While the search for a suitable location is still in its very early stages, property sources have indicated that London’s iconic Oxford Street is the most probable destination for this flagship outlet.

Further solidifying its intentions, Meta’s subsidiary, Meta Labs, recently registered a trademark that specifically permits it to sell and provide demonstrations of "virtual reality, mixed reality and augmented reality hardware and software" to consumers across Britain. This initiative is designed to accelerate the adoption of Meta’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered accessories, including its popular Meta Quest headsets and the stylish Ray-Ban smart glasses, by offering direct, hands-on experiences.

This potential expansion into physical retail follows Meta’s successful venture into pop-up stores in the United States, operating under its Meta Labs brand. These temporary installations have included dedicated Ray-Ban pop-ups in locations such as Los Angeles, providing a testing ground for direct consumer engagement. The company's smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban owner Essilor Luxottica, have already demonstrated impressive market traction, with sales tripling in the past year as more users embrace the cutting-edge technology.

Looking ahead, Meta has already showcased its innovation with the unveiling of an advanced pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses last year, capable of projecting digital objects like computer screens and video games directly into a wearer’s field of view. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, has strongly articulated his vision for the future, predicting that AI-enabled glasses will become so ubiquitous that individuals without them will face a "pretty significant cognitive disadvantage" in keeping up with the world around them.

Despite these clear indications and strategic preparations, Meta has yet to issue an official comment regarding the prospective opening of a physical store in London, maintaining an air of anticipation around the unfolding plans for its foray into permanent retail spaces.
