Micam 100 Steps Into the Future: A Century of Footwear Innovation and Vision
The international footwear trade show, Micam, is poised to inaugurate its monumental 100th edition, a significant milestone achieved amidst an increasingly intricate global marketplace. Scheduled from September 7 to 9 at Fieramilano Rho, this landmark event will host 870 brands, with a strong international presence comprising 469 exhibitors from countries such as Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, and Portugal. The organizers anticipate a robust turnout, expecting to welcome over 30,000 buyers representing 150 nations, underscoring the show's global reach and influence within the industry.
Giovanna Ceolini, President of Assocalzaturifici and Micam, articulated the dual focus of this special edition, stating, "Micam 100 will be a celebratory edition, but with a strong look to the future." This forward-thinking approach is epitomized by the new Micam Next schedule, an evolution of Micam X. Curated by the esteemed Wired Italia, Micam Next will delve into critical contemporary themes including technological innovation, sustainability, and emerging consumption models. The objective is to equip every visitor with valuable inspiration, strategic networking opportunities, and practical tools to foster business growth and adaptation in a dynamic market.
Beyond showcasing exhibitors' Spring/Summer 2026 collections, Micam 100 will pay homage to its rich legacy through a captivating special exhibition titled "100 Steps into the Future." This unique display will chronologically trace the evolution of footwear over the decades, featuring two iconic models for each ten-year period: a lifestyle model reflecting everyday fashion trends and a technical-sports model highlighting advancements in innovation and performance. This curatorial choice aims to illustrate the industry's progression across different facets of design and function.
Ceolini further elaborated on the exhibition's profound significance, explaining, "The exhibition is a tribute to the history of Micam and, at the same time, a projection into the future of the industry." She highlighted how this journey through time will narrate the evolution of taste, technology, design, and the enduring influence of Italian identity on the world stage. "100 Steps into the Future" is envisioned as an immersive exploration of footwear's cultural heritage, while simultaneously prompting reflection on future challenges and inviting a re-evaluation of value by harmoniously blending tradition with innovation in a shared vision for the industry.
A significant highlight of Micam 100 will be the dedicated spotlight on 12 emerging labels, representing the fresh talent and innovative spirit shaping the future of footwear. Among the international names is Le Plagiste from France, relaunched in 2022 by co-founders Simon Michel and Rodolphe Stephan, known for its elegant, casual footwear inspired by the French art of living. From Peru, Canella Brand Shoes, founded by 30-year-old Daniella Pedraglio, draws inspiration from Peruvian culture and utilizes local, eco-sustainable materials. Irish label Bróg, created by Brazilian designer Danieli Bergin, seamlessly combines Irish heritage with elegance and sustainability, employing LWG-certified leather and biodegradable packaging. South Korea is represented by Nuosmiq, which presents genderless designs and upcycling projects from sustainable materials, and Then, launched by Soojin Kim in 2020, supports Seongsu-dong artisans through handmade shoes that blend classical and contemporary aesthetics.
Further enriching the international emerging talent pool are Nigeria's Wuman, founded by Ekwerike Chukwuma, which collaborates with local artisans using traditional techniques and materials; the Dutch brand Sassy Icon, launched in 2022 by Michelle Schager, combining Dutch creativity with Italian craftsmanship, focusing on women’s empowerment and social impact; and the British label Marco Castelli Collection, created by the eponymous Sicilian model, bringing a unique fusion of styles.
Italy's burgeoning design scene will also be prominently featured with labels such as Lancialy Milano; Apice, founded by 20-year-old Zarina Pistonesi, whose creations are inspired by her family’s rich footwear heritage; Le Signe; and Servati, which innovates with 100% recyclable 3D-printed sneakers, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and advanced manufacturing techniques.
The emphasis on young Italian brands is further bolstered by a crucial collaboration with ICE and MAECI. This partnership enables the participation of innovative companies like Next Milano, renowned for its high-performance 3D-printed footwear tailored for sport, lifestyle, and work. Turin-based Steve’s, founded in 2022 by siblings Filippo and Giulia Gandini, places sustainability at its core, utilizing materials such as apple peel waste for uppers and 100% biodegradable rubber soles. Also featured is YU.SH, a luxury footwear company that masterfully merges Florentine craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, embodying the blend of tradition and innovation.
Concluding her remarks, Ceolini underscored the critical importance of nurturing new talent, stating, "Investing in new generations and emerging talents is an unavoidable priority. The future of the footwear industry depends on our ability to enhance talent and foster intergenerational dialogue." She highlighted that young people bring invaluable new ideas, heightened environmental awareness, digital skills, and a global vision that can significantly strengthen the industry's collective know-how. Micam and Assocalzaturifici are actively committed to fostering synergies among companies, schools, academies, and emerging designers, promoting comprehensive training paths, collaborative projects, and tangible visibility opportunities, recognizing human capital as the true strategic lever for navigating tomorrow's challenges.
