M&S Ups Menswear Game with Hugo Boss Addition and Sustainability Push

Marks & Spencer is significantly bolstering its "Brands at M&S" portfolio with the latest high-profile addition of Hugo Boss. The renowned premium brand will initially introduce a collection of men's premium underwear, loungewear, vests, and tees, marking a strategic expansion in M&S's branded offerings. This move aligns with the retailer's ongoing efforts to diversify its product range and cater to evolving customer preferences across various categories.

The decision to onboard Hugo Boss is underpinned by extensive M&S research indicating that a wide range of brands is a top priority for male shoppers across all age groups. This factor is particularly crucial for the 18-34 and 35-54 demographics, which are key target cohorts for the retailer. Stephanie Macleod, Head of Category for Third Party Brands at M&S, stated that the arrival of Hugo Boss and the general expansion of the brand portfolio effectively "complements our strong own-brand proposition and reinforces our ambition to make M&S more relevant, more often."

This initiative also reinforces M&S's deeper strategic focus on enhancing its menswear division. Mitch Hughes, Director of Menswear at M&S, emphasized the company's commitment, stating, “We’re serious about growing menswear and being the go-to destination for men with a stylish, relevant and reliable offer.” He further highlighted that "Having a credible branded offer alongside a confident own-brand proposition is central to our strategy to deliver choice and style, quality & value in one trusted destination.” This strategic push follows the August launch of "M&S Man," a dedicated channel for men's style, designed to cater to modern male shopping habits, where social media is the number one influence for men aged 18-34, and over 60% of all male consumers prefer online browsing and shopping. M&S already holds a strong position as the market leader in men's underwear, with one in five men purchasing their underwear from the retailer, complementing its existing branded underwear and loungewear offerings from labels like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger.

Simultaneously, M&S is making significant strides in its sustainability agenda by partnering with Circulose, a Swedish sustain-tech company. M&S is the first UK brand to join Circulose as a Scaling Partner, committing to integrate a substantial volume of Circulose into its collections. This partnership is designed to foster broader adoption of next-generation circular materials across the fashion industry. Circulose is innovatively made entirely from textile waste, offering a solution that helps fashion brands reduce their reliance on virgin fibers derived from trees and significantly contributes to reducing emissions across the supply chain.

Katharine Beacham, Head of Materials and Sustainability at M&S, underlined the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Partnering with Circulose allows us to put the concept of circular design into action and will be an example of how the industry can move from small-scale pilots to incorporating next-generation materials at a greater scale.” She added that by integrating circular materials into its sourcing strategy, M&S is "helping to build a fashion industry that’s fit for the future," demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainable practices alongside its commercial growth strategies.
