Mulberry Relaunches Iconic Roxanne Bag With A Fantastical Campaign And New Family of Styles
Mulberry is making headlines this week with the highly anticipated relaunch of the iconic Roxanne bag, one of its most recognizable creations. This significant return is accompanied by a "fantastical campaign" meticulously crafted by longtime collaborator Tim Walker and prominently featuring "Wicked" actor, Cynthia Erivo, marking a new chapter for a bag that once graced the arms of influential figures like Kate Moss and Alexa Chung.
The Roxanne's comeback sees it evolve into a comprehensive family of bags, expanding beyond its original form. While the beloved 2004 style remains accessible through The Mulberry Exchange, the collection now introduces four modern iterations. Among these are the new Roxanne and Small Roxanne, described by the company as "odes to the much-loved original," encapsulating its "punky, Y2K attitude" with contemporary updates such as brass buckles and streamlined details.
Both the new Roxanne and Small Roxanne offer versatile wearability, designed to be carried comfortably either over the shoulder or as a crossbody, and are intricately constructed from 44 individual pattern pieces. Further expanding the collection are two entirely new silhouettes, the Roxanne Shoulder Bag and the Mini Roxanne Shoulder Bag, which Mulberry states "epitomise Mulberry in 2025." These lighter, more versatile styles are tailored for modern living, boasting sleek silhouettes and the signature brass buckle detailing.
The complete Roxanne family collection is set to be available to the public from September 8th, with prices for these new additions starting at £795. The launch price point reflects the premium craftsmanship and design expected from the iconic British brand.
The accompanying "fantastical campaign" is a collaborative masterpiece. Tim Walker, renowned for his distinct photographic style, once again lends his creative vision to Mulberry, while acclaimed stylist and Harvey Nichols creative director Kate Phelan provides the expert styling credits. The campaign's "surreal" and "playful" still images are designed to bring the "Mulberry Spirit" to life, showcasing Erivo within a "warped, dreamlike room" vibrant with color and texture, complete with elements like rope swings, fireplaces, and decorative carpets.
Beyond the captivating stills, the campaign also includes a "softly shot video series" titled "Mulberry Moments." This intimate in-conversation series features Cynthia Erivo alongside fashion journalist and "The Cutting Room Floor" host, Recho Omondi. Across eight personal short films, the duo delves into a variety of topics, including Erivo's very first Mulberry bag, her earliest memories of growing up in London, and the profound emotional connection she sees between fashion and her other artistic pursuits like singing and acting.
Cynthia Erivo herself expressed her profound connection to the relaunch, stating, "As a born and bred Londoner I remember longing for a Mulberry – the ultimate statement bag – so this moment really feels full circle." She added that the campaign effectively captures the Roxanne bag’s rebellious yet romantic spirit, qualities she resonates with in her own style. Erivo emphasized her belief that true style stems from authentic self-expression and collaboration, factors that drew her to partner with Mulberry, an "Iconic British brand who champion creativity, craftsmanship, and cultivate a sense of community."
