New Leader Steers Portuguese Footwear Industry Forward
The Portuguese footwear, components, and leather goods manufacturers’ association, APICCAPS, has announced the appointment of Paulo Gonçalves as its new executive director, effective January 9th. This leadership change marks a new chapter for the association, which plays a vital role in supporting Portugal’s significant footwear industry.
Gonçalves is a long-standing member of the APICCAPS team, having joined the organization in 1998 following his graduation from the Porto School of Journalism with a degree in social communication. Throughout his 26-year tenure, he has consistently demonstrated commitment and expertise, most recently serving as the director of communications.
In his previous role, Gonçalves was instrumental in shaping and executing APICCAPS’s communications strategy, and fostering strong relationships with both national and international media outlets. The association specifically highlighted his success in bolstering the Portuguese footwear sector’s presence and reputation within global markets.
The decision to appoint Gonçalves to the position of executive director was made by the APICCAPS board and is presented as a recognition of his dedicated service, professionalism, and competence over the past quarter-century. He takes the helm from Luís Onofre, who has led the association since 2017 and was recently re-elected as president two years ago.
APICCAPS, established in 1975, is a comprehensive representative body for the Portuguese footwear cluster. It currently represents over 1,500 companies encompassing footwear manufacturing, component production, leather goods, related equipment industries, and supporting trade sectors, solidifying its position as a key driver of the Portuguese economy.
