Nordic Cool Sweeps Paris Elevating Fashion Landscape

A distinctive northern breeze of fashion is notably sweeping through Paris as the year draws to a close, solidifying the long-standing love affair between contemporary Scandinavian style and the French capital. This trend is underscored by significant strategic moves from leading brands, often signaling an intentional shift towards a more upmarket positioning. A prime example is Swedish powerhouse Acne Studios, which recently unveiled its elegant new Parisian headquarters after a decade in the Marais, a clear statement of its elevated status in the global fashion landscape.

Finnish design icon Marimekko has made a significant stride with the opening of its first Parisian boutique on October 24. Situated at 120, rue Vieille du Temple in the bustling Marais district, the 140-square-meter space marks a pivotal moment for the brand, renowned for its iconic graphic prints and optimistic aesthetic since its founding by Armi Ratia in 1951. Before this flagship launch, Marimekko had successfully tested the Parisian market with popular pop-ups at prestigious department stores like Le Bon Marché and Galeries Lafayette.

This new French flagship is a comprehensive showcase of Marimekko’s full lifestyle universe, extending beyond ready-to-wear to include bags, accessories, home décor, and an extensive tableware offering, thoughtfully arranged around a staged family dining room. The brand, which boasts a robust global network of 170 points of sale, already operates flagships in major cities worldwide, including Helsinki, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. For its Parisian debut, Marimekko celebrated by offering gifts to its first customers and collaborating with florist Castor, creating an inviting atmosphere that complements its attractive façade and colorful windows, which adjoin the boutique of another prominent Scandinavian brand, Ganni.

Just a few meters away from Marimekko, the Danish menswear label Les Deux also celebrated a milestone, opening its first boutique outside Scandinavia at 32, rue de Poitou. This inaugural international store is a significant step in enhancing its global profile. Ganni, the Danish label founded by Frans Truelsen in 2000 and later acquired by Ditte and Nicolaj Reffstrup, has long been captivated by Parisian charms, having established shops in the city since 2022 and even a dedicated creative and design team. While its main shows are staged in Copenhagen, Ganni presented its distinct vision in a spectacular Parisian space during Fashion Week in September, where Ditte Reffstrup showcased creative experiments inspired by her Danish countryside childhood with subtlety and poetry.

Ganni's continued ascent into a premium positioning, reinforced by shareholders like L Catterton, is evident in these creative endeavors that are increasingly infused into its commercial collections. This upmarket trajectory is further solidified by the brand's forthcoming move into an upscale district, with a new flagship store set to open at 17 rue François Ier. This strategic location, a stone's throw from the iconic Avenue Montaigne, positions Ganni closer to the discerning clientele of luxury houses, to whom it aims to offer a compelling alternative, particularly as its bags and leather goods offerings gain momentum with new models launching in spring.

A similar strategy is observed with Toteme, the Swedish label founded by Elin Kling and Karl Lindman in 2014. On November 7, Toteme inaugurated its expansive 222-square-meter boutique spread across two levels at 27 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The store presents the brand's signature offering of classic pieces characterized by precise cuts and refined materials within a pared-back, mineral ambiance. The exterior features a light grey waxed-concrete façade with a tone-on-tone brand name, framing bright windows that elegantly display coats. Inside, the "Swedish soul" of the brand is expressed through grey marble designer furniture, creating a gallery-like setting for the collection. An inviting large cream sofa upstairs showcases the extensive selection of bags to customers.

Toteme, which showcased its spring-summer 2026 collection in New York, has been actively expanding its global footprint. It recently opened a second London shop on Sloane Street, adding to its existing presence on Mount Street, and also operates boutiques in Copenhagen and Stockholm. The brand has a strong foothold in the US market, where its founders began their project over a decade ago, with six shops. In Asia, Toteme has established boutiques in China, Japan, and South Korea. Demonstrating its impressive growth, the brand announced in the US press that it surpassed the US$100 million revenue mark in 2023 and is targeting US$150 million in 2024.

The H&M Group is also actively strengthening its presence in Paris with its various banners. & Other Stories, which already has two shops in the French capital at 35, rue Montmartre and 76, rue Vieille du Temple, opened its third Parisian store this Friday at 43, boulevard Haussmann. Under the new leadership of Jonathan Saunders, the brand introduced a fresh creative chapter in September, drawing inspiration from the codes of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1990s. This mood is set to be fully expressed within the new 340-square-meter shop, complemented by a new, more pared-back logo that echoes an ambition to engage with more luxurious design codes. Launched in 2013, & Other Stories maintains a long-standing connection with Paris, as the City of Light hosts one of its three ateliers, with the others located in Stockholm and Los Angeles.

Further within the H&M Group, multi-brand retailer Weekday is expanding its footprint by taking over the Monki boutique (also owned by the group) on Rue de Rivoli. This adds to Weekday's existing shops at 121, rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais and 8, rue de Marseille in the 10th arrondissement. The Scandinavian fashion craze shows no signs of abating. Swedish label Our Legacy, backed by L Catterton, has established a subsidiary in France and, following a recent corner opening at Printemps, is rumored to be actively seeking a flagship store in the capital. Similarly, Samsøe & Samsøe, which recently collaborated with Merci for a pop-up, has also refined its offering in recent seasons with an upmarket shift and plans to open a new flagship in a prime Parisian neighborhood in the coming months. Velkomst!
