Olivier Rousteing Departs Balmain After 14 Years of Fashion Reinvention
Creative Director Olivier Rousteing has officially departed from Balmain, the esteemed Paris-based fashion house announced Tuesday, concluding a remarkable 14-year tenure. Rousteing, who assumed the role of Creative Director in April 2011, is credited with staging a series of critically acclaimed collections and shows that, as the house stated in a release, “his vision and creative genius propelled Balmain to unprecedented heights.” His departure marks a significant moment for the luxury brand he so distinctively shaped.
Reflecting on his time at Balmain, Rousteing expressed deep gratitude and pride. “I am deeply proud of everything I have accomplished, and infinitely grateful to my exceptional team at Balmain, my chosen family, in a place that has been my home for the past 14 years,” Rousteing shared in the release. He extended thanks to Mr. Rachid and Matteo for their unwavering trust and the extraordinary opportunity they provided. As he looks ahead to the next chapter of his creative journey, he affirmed that he will always cherish this special time.
Rousteing became a celebrated figure in Paris fashion, renowned for his distinctive aesthetic that seamlessly blended haute couture silhouettes with a bold rock 'n' roll attitude and bravura staging. His collections not only garnered critical praise but also attracted a constellation of stars, including Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez, further cementing Balmain's status on the global stage.
Balmain has not yet named a successor to Rousteing, stating only that a “new creative organization of the house will be announced at a needed moment.” Leadership within Mayhoola, Balmain's parent company, offered profound thanks to the departing creative director. Mr. Rachid Mohamed Rachid, CEO of Mayhoola and Chairman of Balmain, extended his sincere gratitude for Rousteing's "extraordinary contribution," highlighting his visionary leadership, redefined boundaries of fashion, and inspiration to an entire generation through his bold creativity, unwavering authenticity, and commitment to inclusivity. Similarly, CEO Matteo Sgarbossa conveyed his deep gratitude, acknowledging Rousteing for writing an important chapter in the house’s history and leaving an indelible mark on the fashion world.
Olivier Rousteing's journey to the pinnacle of Balmain is a testament to his resilience and talent. Born in Bordeaux to a Somalian mother and Ethiopian father, he was abandoned in an orphanage as a child before being adopted by a bourgeois family. A serious student, he pursued his education at Esmod art college in Bordeaux before moving to Florence to join Robert Cavalli's design studio. His association with Balmain began in 2009 as director of the women’s wear design studio under Christophe Decarnin, whom he succeeded in 2011. Beyond his mainline collections, Rousteing’s extensive creative portfolio includes designing costumes for the Opera National in Paris, staging a solo haute couture show for Balmain, and presenting a much-admired collection as a guest designer for the house of Jean-Paul Gaultier in 2022.
The house of Balmain itself boasts a rich heritage, founded in 1945 by Pierre Balmain with an innovative vision, embodying the "New French Style." Today, alongside its acclaimed ready-to-wear and accessory collections for women and men, the brand extends its reach to an international audience through Balmain Beauty, inspired by its iconic fragrances from the 1940s and 1950s, as well as its distinctive eyewear. Balmain is currently controlled by Mayhoola, a luxury holding company owned by the Qatari royal family, which also counts Valentino in Rome among its prestigious portfolio.
