Paul Stuart Rebranded: Private Equity Group Bets on Luxury Menswear’s Future
Luxury menswear brand Paul Stuart has been acquired by Middle West Partners (MWP), a private investment group, marking a significant change in ownership for the iconic New York City-based fashion house.
The acquisition was completed in partnership with Peerless Clothing Inc., a leading apparel manufacturer. The brand was purchased from Mitsui & Co., who had held ownership for over half a century, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to Paul Stuart’s legacy.
Financial details of the transaction have not been publicly released. However, the deal signifies a vote of confidence in the enduring appeal and potential of the Paul Stuart brand within the luxury menswear market.
Accompanying the change in ownership is the appointment of John Hutchison, formerly the chief executive officer of Bonobos, as the new CEO of Paul Stuart. This leadership change is expected to bring fresh perspectives and drive further growth for the brand.
Kevin Kelleher, managing partner of MWP, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “The Paul Stuart name continues to resonate with a discerning client 87 years later, and we still see so much more potential for this luxury heritage brand.” He further emphasized the firm’s commitment to preserving the brand’s quality and expanding its global reach.
Michael Hamp, a co-founding partner at MWP, shared a personal connection to the brand, noting, “Paul Stuart has been one of my family's favorite brands for more than 25 years. It has a look that's distinctly its own—when you walk down the street, you know it's Paul Stuart.” He described the opportunity to steward the brand as both a “privilege and honor,” highlighting a deep appreciation for its history and style.
This acquisition represents a continued expansion of MWP’s brand portfolio, following their earlier purchase of high jewelry house David Webb earlier this year, signaling a strategic focus on investing in established luxury brands.
