Perfectwhitetee Founders Turn Simple White Tee into a Fashion Empire

Perfectwhitetee, a Californian fashion brand founded in 2020 by friends Lisa Hickey and Jen Menchaca, has rapidly emerged as a significant success story in the apparel industry. Drawing on decades of combined experience in fashion, the duo launched the brand with a clear vision, achieving astonishing growth within just five years. To date, Perfectwhitetee has sold over 1.3 million pieces, including nearly 200,000 white tees, and has introduced more than 130 custom colors, creating beloved styles like the Ziggy, Hendrix, and Harley, each surpassing 50,000 units sold. While the brand explored brick-and-mortar with a New York store in 2023 (now closed) and a Beverly Hills pop-up last September, its strategic focus is firmly on expanding its e-commerce presence, already reaching international markets such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, and Japan.

The foundation of Perfectwhitetee stems from a long-standing friendship and professional collaboration between Lisa and Jen. They initially connected years before the brand's inception when Lisa handled sales for Jen’s previous brand through her multi-line showroom in New York. Over approximately seven years of working closely together, their professional relationship blossomed into a deep friendship. Both were immersed in the fashion industry, constantly engaging with trade shows, buyers, and gaining profound insights into the desires of retailers and customers alike.

By 2019, Lisa and Jen independently identified a significant void in the market. As self-proclaimed "obsessed" enthusiasts of high-quality basics, they realized that finding a truly perfect white T-shirt—one that was consistently in stock, impeccably made, and responsibly produced in the U.S.—was surprisingly challenging. This realization sparked their entrepreneurial journey, leading them to create Perfectwhitetee. Their guiding principle was to perfect existing essentials rather than reinventing the wheel, focusing on timeless pieces crafted with exceptional quality.

Launching in 2020, mere days before the global pandemic shut down economies worldwide, could have been a fatal blow. However, for Perfectwhitetee, it became an unexpected opportunity to leverage their community and local production model. With everything made in Los Angeles, they demonstrated remarkable agility, quickly adapting to changing circumstances, supporting retail partners when supply chains faltered, and fostering organic growth through their established relationships. From its very beginning, the brand has been rooted in this shared vision: to create products they genuinely love, on their own terms.

For Lisa and Jen, the perfect T-shirt is more than just a garment; it carries an emotional resonance. Lisa notes their lifelong love for T-shirts, while Jen fondly recalls her father's perfectly worn-in white V-neck, a symbol of timeless, effortless style. This sentimental connection became the bedrock for Perfectwhitetee. They observed that for most brands, T-shirts were an afterthought, a supplementary item to denim or dress collections. Perfectwhitetee, however, chose to lead with the tee, aiming to "own the word ‘perfect’" by meticulously crafting the ultimate V-neck, crew, tank, sweatshirt, and jogger. Their philosophy centers on doing fewer things, but executing them exceptionally well, ensuring every style is the best in its category. Local production in Los Angeles further enables them to remain responsive to customer and retailer feedback, making real-time adjustments as needed.

The brand's commitment to quality is evident in its meticulous fabric selection. Jen emphasizes that the tee is the very foundation of a wardrobe, necessitating particular attention to materials. Their tees are crafted from crisp, high-quality cotton, knitted and finished in California at a family-owned mill. For staple pieces like the Harley T-shirt, they focus on achieving the ideal weight and "hand" (feel) of the cotton, directly responding to consumer preferences. Perfectwhitetee also produces signature fabrics like French terry, seen in the Johnny Jogger, and a favorite fleece, which is integral to the viral Ziggy sweatshirt. The majority of their garments are knitted, cut, sewn, and dyed in Los Angeles, and they also offer a recycled cotton blend capsule, featured in the Alanis tee.

Producing their core basics in California was a deliberate and deeply held decision for the founders. Lisa explains that from day one, they sought to create pieces that were not only beautifully designed but also made with integrity, close to home, and with the flexibility to quickly adapt to customer and retail partner needs. They collaborate with a family-owned, vertically integrated knit and sewing factory in Los Angeles that possesses deep expertise in fabrics. This factory’s connection to its own knitting mill means that every fabric is created specifically for Perfectwhitetee, avoiding generic, off-the-shelf blanks. This vertical integration allows them to fine-tune every detail, from knit weight and hand-feel to drape and quality control, a level of precision often unachievable by mass-produced basics. Jen adds that local production enables a hands-on, transparent process, allowing them to literally visit the factory, monitor production, and make real-time adjustments, ensuring every Perfectwhitetee piece lives up to its name while supporting the local community.

Despite selling over 1.3 million pieces, the white T-shirt remains the emotional and aesthetic cornerstone of the brand. Jen highlights its enduring appeal: "that sense of putting on your perfect white tee, the one you won’t let anyone borrow, the one you’ll bleach and re-wash because it’s that special." This sentiment continues to drive the brand's bestseller list. While the simple white tee is foundational, Perfectwhitetee's success has expanded beyond a single color or style, with other top-performing pieces including the Ziggy sweatshirt, Blondie tank, and Johnny sweatpants.

Regarding retail strategy, Perfectwhitetee tested the waters with a pop-up store in Beverly Hills last September. Lisa confirmed its success, noting "we did very very well," but clarified that the brand is not currently prioritizing a permanent brick-and-mortar expansion. Their primary focus remains on developing their robust e-commerce platform. Their main markets within the U.S. are New York and Los Angeles, followed by Chicago and Dallas, with a growing international presence in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and now, Japan, through a newly launched e-commerce site.

Perfectwhitetee is continually expanding its product offerings. They recently launched a "perfect trouser" for Spring 2026 to positive feedback and are developing more sweaters and select outerwear pieces for Fall 2026. While a children's line is a frequent request from their team of moms and collaborators, Lisa stated it's not in the immediate future. However, they successfully launched a small men's collection, which is performing well. Lisa observes that men, once they find a T-shirt they like, tend to purchase it in multiple colors for years, making the initial trial and acceptance crucial.
