Portugal Cultivates a Cotton Revolution with Hydroponic Innovation
A groundbreaking collaboration between Agromethod Labs and CITEVE is poised to revolutionize cotton cultivation in Portugal through an innovative hydroponic approach. This ambitious project aims to establish Portugal as the sole European nation capable of hosting the entire cotton value chain, from raw fibre production to finished clothing, entirely within its borders.
Agromethod Labs, a start-up founded earlier this year by Raquel Maria, a chemist with a distinguished background in academic research, is spearheading this initiative. Driven by a personal commitment to sustainability, Maria established the lab with a core mission to develop future-oriented agricultural solutions. Her decision to transition from academia was fueled by a desire to translate theoretical knowledge into real-world impact, addressing pressing global challenges for future generations. While Agromethod Labs is exploring various crops, cotton quickly emerged as a primary focus, building upon foundational research by experts such as Filipe Natálio, currently at UCIBIO, NOVA FCT. However, Maria emphasizes that the company's vision extends beyond cotton, with ongoing work planned for other crops and seeds.
The partnership with CITEVE proved to be a critical turning point for the hydroponic cotton project. According to Raquel Maria, the initiative, which had largely existed "on paper," desperately needed initial investment and a robust technological partner to move forward. CITEVE’s timely involvement provided the necessary support and expertise, transforming a well-conceived idea into a tangible reality. This collaboration has already led to the successful implementation of a functional mini pilot, yielding measurable results, and is now paving the way for the next phase: a larger-scale pilot incorporating vertical farming techniques to significantly maximize the production area.
Hydroponic cultivation presents a multitude of significant advantages, as highlighted by Raquel Maria. This advanced technique liberates farming from traditional constraints, allowing cultivation anywhere in the world, irrespective of sunlight availability or geographical limitations. Furthermore, it enables continuous production, breaking free from the single annual harvest cycle. With hydroponics, growers can achieve three to four harvests per year, dramatically increasing productivity. Early results from the pilot also indicate a remarkable improvement in fibre quality, with cotton exhibiting superior mechanical properties and enhanced whiteness, which could subsequently streamline and reduce stages in textile processing.
Despite these promising advancements, Raquel Maria acknowledges that challenges remain, particularly concerning the higher initial costs associated with hydroponic cultivation. To address this, the upcoming larger-scale pilot will integrate vertical farming, aiming to double the production area. This strategic move is expected to bring the project closer to achieving economic viability. Given the elevated production costs and the enhanced value of the fibre, the raw material produced in the initial phase will primarily target specialized markets, where its superior qualities can command a premium.
The small-scale production conducted within a dedicated facility at CITEVE has already successfully produced yarn from hydroponic cotton. The next symbolic milestone is to create a T-shirt, a tangible representation of cotton grown and processed in Portugal, an achievement Raquel Maria describes as "wonderful." With expansion efforts slated for the next six months, the goal is to substantially increase production and accelerate market entry. The Portuguese textile industry has already shown considerable enthusiasm, with numerous expressions of interest, and Agromethod Labs is eager to collaborate with local companies.
However, the ambition of Agromethod Labs extends far beyond mere fibre production. Raquel Maria envisions Portugal becoming the first and only country in Europe to boast a complete, integrated cotton value chain—from the cultivation of the raw material to the manufacturing of the final product—all contained within its national territory. Such an accomplishment would represent a monumental milestone for the country, solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable and innovative textile production.
