Prada Mode London Explores Spectatorship Through Art and Film
Prada is set to host the 13th iteration of its highly anticipated Prada Mode event in London next month, transforming the recently restored landmark Town Hall in King’s Cross. From October 15th to 19th, the Italian fashion powerhouse will collaborate with acclaimed artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, offering an immersive cultural experience that coincides with Frieze London.
At the heart of Prada Mode London is Elmgreen & Dragset's latest installation, titled "The Audience." This multi-day event centers around an immersive cinematic-form experience designed as both a sculptural environment and a profound meditation on spectatorship in our contemporary world. It directly addresses the challenges of image overload, hyperconnectivity, and the prevalent attention deficit of the digital age.
Within this unique space, visitors will encounter an intentionally blurred film, written by Elmgreen & Dragset, projected in a continuous loop. The film depicts a seemingly repeating scene from a feature-length drama, where a painter and a writer engage in a discussion about their creative practices within their shared flat. Complementing this cinematic narrative, the physical auditorium environment features five hyperrealistic sculptures of cinemagoers, strategically placed in various states of attention across the seats, blurring the line between the staged and the real audience.
The installation's narrative extends beyond the immediate cinema setting with an additional sculpture, "The Conversation." This piece portrays a lone female figure seated at a café table, engaged in a FaceTime call with one of the characters from the film. Presented together, these integrated installations meticulously obscure the conventional divide between viewer and viewed, compelling attendees to consciously reflect on the very act of watching itself.
Elmgreen & Dragset articulate their vision for "The Audience," stating that it's fundamentally a work about spectatorship and the redirection of the visitor's gaze. They express a long-standing interest in crafting exhibitions that fragment attention, cultivate uncertainty, and encourage spectators to navigate familiar environments in novel ways. The artists emphasize that while being part of a cinema or theatre audience traditionally implies sharing a collective experience, "The Audience" renders that shared moment visible, integrating the attendees directly into the unfolding narrative.
Beyond the central installation, Prada Mode London will feature a dynamic program of talks, stimulating conversations, dedicated film screenings, evocative performances, and curated DJ sets. These supplementary events are designed to further delve into the concept of spectatorship, fostering new modes of thought around how audiences gather, engage, and respond within various contexts.
Access to Prada Mode London will be structured over its five-day run. For the initial two days, October 15th and 16th, the venue will operate as a private members' club. Following this, from October 17th to 19th, the event will open its doors to the general public, inviting a wider audience to experience this distinctive cultural exploration.
