Prada’s Pop Art Blooms in Portugal’s Historic Palace
A captivating exhibition showcasing the vibrant designs of Spanish fashion designer Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada is set to illuminate the historic Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval in Évora, Portugal. Entitled ‘Évora Luz,’ the display will open on Saturday, January 10th, and run through March 8th, offering a unique fusion of contemporary art and historical architecture.
The Cadaval Palace, in a post on Instagram, describes ‘Évora Luz’ as an invitation to “discover a vibrant exhibition” where colour, creativity, and identity interact with the Dukes of Cadaval’s esteemed collection. The exhibition promises an “artistic experience” that will transform the palace’s historic setting into a contemporary space, celebrating both creative freedom and the emotive power of colour.
This marks the first time the 14th-century palace – originally built on the foundations of a Moorish castle – has hosted such a curatorial project, reimagining itself as a stage exclusively for the work of Ruiz de la Prada. The Madrid-born designer, a Grandee of Spain, is renowned for her embrace of light, colour, and the aesthetics of Pop Art.
Ruiz de la Prada’s connection with Portugal extends beyond this new exhibition. In 2017, she presented her third exhibition within the country, held in Monsaraz, Alentejo, and featured a selection of her runway creations. More recently, in 2023, she launched her biography at the historic Livraria Lello in Porto, and in 2022, participated in Portugal Fashion, with a substantial portion of her label’s garments being manufactured in Riba d’Ave and Vila Nova de Famalicão.
The exhibition’s location, nestled beside the Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Diana, further enhances the compelling dialogue between history and modern artistic expression that ‘Évora Luz’ aims to create.
