Primark’s Activewear Revolution: Affordable Style for Every Move

Primark’s Activewear Revolution: Affordable Style for Every Move

The activewear market is bracing for a significant shake-up as Primark, the popular high-street retailer, expands its presence in the sector with a substantial new collection. This isn’t a tentative step; Primark is making a serious play for a larger share of the market, building on its existing activewear offerings with a launch that’s both extensive and ambitious.

The newly launched collection boasts an impressive 240 pieces, encompassing women’s, men’s, and kidswear. A key differentiator is Primark’s commitment to affordability, with accessories starting at just £2.50 and activewear pieces from £4.50, all while promising “premium performance fabrics.” Complementing the apparel is a dedicated beauty range, ‘Performance Beauty’, featuring skincare, SPF, and recovery products designed to support active lifestyles.

Primark is backing the launch with a global marketing campaign centered around the tagline ‘Every Move Counts’, aiming to “celebrate the joy of everyday movement.” The campaign features prominent musicians Rita Ora and Krept, showcasing the versatility of the range – from high-performance training gear to relaxed, everyday lifestyle looks. The collection is currently available in 72 stores across the UK and via Click & Collect.

This expansion into activewear is a strategic move for Primark, as the category is already its fastest-growing, with sales nearly doubling in the past year. The retailer views this launch as a significant investment, demonstrating its ability to deliver innovative, high-quality activewear fabrics at accessible price points, available year-round.

The collection features four new technical fabrications tailored to different activities: ‘Seamfree’ for a smooth, comfortable fit; ‘Buttery Soft’ for unrestricted movement; ‘Smooth Support’ for training; and ‘Body(sculpt)’ for intense workouts. These fabrics are designed to enhance performance and comfort across a wide range of activities.

Leggings are a central focus of the new range, capitalizing on Primark’s position as the UK’s leading high-street retailer for leggings by volume – selling over 70 pairs per minute. The expanded selection offers multiple fits and fabric options, catering to everything from high-intensity training to casual wear, all starting at £4.50.

Steve Lawton, Primark’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized the brand’s core philosophy with this launch: “democratising activewear.” He stated that Primark is bringing premium innovation and fabrication to the market without excluding customers based on price. He believes that looking and feeling good shouldn’t require a significant financial investment, and activewear is a prime example of this principle.

Lawton further highlighted the collection’s quality and value, asserting that the pieces rival more expensive options in terms of fit, feel, color, and performance. He reiterated that the range is designed for everyone, regardless of their activity level or budget, offering accessible style and functionality for all aspects of life.
