Puma Restructures for Unified Storytelling Under New Chief Brand Officer
Puma, the renowned Herzogenaurach-based sports company, has announced a significant strategic reorganization aimed at enhancing its brand marketing and product storytelling capabilities. This comprehensive restructuring will integrate key functional areas, including product development, innovation, go-to-market strategies, and brand marketing, under a unified structure. The primary objective is to streamline the brand's narrative, ensuring more consistent and impactful communication around its products.
At the heart of this organizational shift is the appointment of Maria Valdes, previously Chief Product Officer, to the pivotal role of Chief Brand Officer. Valdes, 41, will now lead this newly integrated organization at Executive Board level, effective immediately. This move underscores Puma's commitment to a cohesive approach where product creation and storytelling develop in parallel, designed to "deliver authentic and impactful stories that inspire customers and consumers."
Arthur Hoeld, Puma's CEO, elaborated on the necessity of this change, stating that while Puma possesses a rich archive and cutting-edge sports-performance products, including its NITRO™-technology, the brand's previous approach to storytelling was "too fragmented." By placing storytelling and product creation side by side, Puma aims to strengthen its iconic products and sports performance offerings, creating the clarity and structure needed to effectively compete within the dynamic sporting goods industry.
Maria Valdes, who has been a member of Puma's Executive Board since 2023, now assumes an expanded portfolio of responsibilities. Her remit will encompass brand marketing, product, creative direction, innovation, and go-to-market strategies. This consolidation marks a significant shift from the previous structure, where brand marketing reported directly to CEO Arthur Hoeld, and go-to-market functions were under Chief Commercial Officer Matthias Bäumer. Furthermore, sports marketing will now be separated from brand marketing, reporting directly to CEO Arthur Hoeld.
This organizational transformation reflects a clear strategic direction to foster a more integrated and impactful brand presence. The new structure takes effect immediately, signaling Puma's swift action in implementing these changes. This move follows another recent key appointment, as the company announced last week the addition of Ronald Reijmers as Vice President, Global Retail, tasked with leading the development of Puma's full-price and outlet stores worldwide, further indicating a period of strategic enhancements across various facets of the business.
