Rapha Opens Next-Gen Clubhouse in Shanghai, Igniting China's Cycling Community

London-based performance cyclewear brand Rapha has officially opened its inaugural 'Clubhouse' in mainland China, a significant move marking a major milestone for the company. Situated on Donghu Road within Shanghai’s historic Hengshan-Fuxing Road Cultural Area, this new space represents a purposeful commitment to one of the world's fastest-growing cycling communities. Following a recent soft opening, the Clubhouse is set to host its official grand opening later this month, further solidifying Rapha's presence in the region.

The Shanghai Clubhouse is heralded as the "first expression of Rapha’s next-generation Clubhouse concept," drawing inspiration from the "effortless elegance of Italian cafés." It reimagines the traditional *circolo*, or club, as a modern hub for connection and community among cyclists. The interior design, rooted in British industrial aesthetics and refined through a mid-century modern lens, seamlessly blends materials such as walnut, stainless steel, white oak, and ceramic tiling. Subtle pink accents, a nod to Rapha’s signature colour, complete the sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. Housed within a beautifully restored 1925 mansion, the Clubhouse thoughtfully honours the building’s storied past while embarking on a new chapter for Rapha in China.

At its core, the Clubhouse is designed as a vibrant cultural anchor for cyclists. It will regularly host rides and various events, offering a dedicated space where riders can connect over coffee and their shared passion for the sport. Rapha CEO Fran Millar underscored this vision, stating, "Our calling has never been clearer: cycling has the power to change lives – and nowhere is that more visible right now than in China. The Rapha Shanghai Clubhouse will become home to a thriving cycling community and a launchpad for a bold new chapter in our mission to build the greatest club in the world."

Rapha's expansion into China comes at a time of rapid growth for the brand’s community in the region. Leading this charge is Ariel Huang, Rapha’s newly-appointed general manager for China, who brings extensive expertise in marketing and community building, previously honed at Sweaty Betty. In just over a year since entering the market, the Rapha Cycling Club (RCC) has swelled to over 400 members across Shanghai and Beijing. Demonstrating the burgeoning enthusiasm, participation in this year’s Women’s 100 – a global celebration of women’s cycling – surpassed 1,000 riders across mainland China. Huang articulated the broader impact, noting, "This won’t be just a store – it’s a new chapter. In just a year, we’ve seen a groundswell of energy across China’s cycling scene. This Clubhouse will be the beating heart of that movement – a place to belong, to be inspired, and to go further, together."

This landmark opening also signals the initial phase of a wider strategy to enhance Rapha’s physical presence across Asia, with Shanghai providing the perfect foundation for a new format that is envisioned to roll out in major cities worldwide. Furthermore, the Clubhouse will debut an exciting co-retail partnership with Factor Bikes, recognized as one of the world’s most innovative high-performance cycling brands. Rob Gitelis, founder of Factor Bikes, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “United by a shared ambition to push the sport of cycling forward, we’re creating a new kind of destination for cyclists in China – immersive, inspiring, and built for those who live to ride.” This collaborative venture promises to deliver a uniquely integrated experience for the cycling community in China.
