Rei Kawakubo Adrian Joffe and Dickon Bowden to Receive Prestigious Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator
The British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced that Rei Kawakubo, Adrian Joffe, and Dickon Bowden are set to receive the prestigious Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator. This significant honour will be presented to the trio at The Fashion Awards, taking place in London next month on December 1st, recognizing their profound impact on the global fashion landscape.
The recognition specifically celebrates their pivotal role in establishing Dover Street Market (DSM), an internationally acclaimed retail concept that has redefined luxury fashion. Marking its 20th anniversary last year, DSM is widely lauded as the pioneering concept store of its kind, offering a unique platform that seamlessly integrates emerging talent, established brands, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. It has become a crucial name at the vanguard of international luxury fashion retail, known for its innovative approach to immersive brand storytelling and artistic exploration.
More than just a retail space, Dover Street Market has evolved into a living, breathing cultural hub. Through its distinctive experimental installations and unconventional displays, it actively dissolves the traditional boundaries between fashion, art, and commerce. The BFC highlighted DSM's success in fostering a collaborative community within the fashion industry, consistently shaping global conversations. With strategically located stores in major fashion capitals including London, Tokyo, New York City, Singapore, Beijing, Los Angeles, and Paris, its influence is felt worldwide.
While Rei Kawakubo, co-founder and creative director of Comme des Garçons, is perhaps the most globally recognized figure among the founders, all three individuals have been instrumental in DSM's unparalleled success. Kawakubo herself is credited by the BFC for her revolutionary designs that have significantly influenced contemporary fashion and for laying the conceptual foundation of DSM. Adrian Joffe, CEO and co-founder and president of Comme des Garçons International, has provided instrumental leadership in the brand curation and the ongoing evolution of the DSM concept. Dickon Bowden, serving as the VP of DSM, has been a guiding force behind the company’s extensive international expansion.
Laura Weir, chief executive of the BFC, lauded the trio's unwavering commitment to innovation, their dedicated support for emerging talent, and their passion for cultivating an authentic creative community. She emphasized how these contributions continue to profoundly influence the industry and challenge wider fashion discourse. The Isabella Blow Award itself carries a significant legacy, with past recipients including celebrated figures such as Tyler Mitchell, Campbell Addy, Edward Enninful, IB Kamara, Katie Grand, Amanda Harlech, Mert & Marcus, Nick Knight, Pat McGrath, Professor Louise Wilson, and Sam McKnight, placing Kawakubo, Joffe, and Bowden among a distinguished roster of fashion visionaries.
