Reiss Pirouettes into Fashion with The Royal Ballet Collection
Reiss, a premium retailer known for its sophisticated fashion, has unveiled its latest collaboration, an intriguing partnership that stands out even among its recent innovative ventures. This unique alliance sees Reiss linking up with The Royal Ballet, forging an exclusive collection deeply "inspired by the artistry, grace and costumes" inherent to the elite dance organisation. This collaboration aims to seamlessly blend Reiss’s distinctive "modern design aesthetic with the world-class language of movement, dance and performances seen on the Royal Ballet and Opera’s stages."
The collection itself is remarkably extensive, featuring a total of 60 individual pieces. Beyond its fashion appeal, this partnership also serves a noble cause: it actively supports the ongoing work and artistic endeavours of The Royal Ballet. A commendable 10% of all sales generated from this collection will be directly donated to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Foundation, underscoring a commitment to nurturing the arts.
Drawing inspiration directly from The Royal Ballet’s rich classical repertoire, the collection is thoughtfully organised into four distinct capsules. These capsules span a diverse range of attire, encompassing everything "from streetwear to studio, and performance, to celebratory after-party," all while offering "special glimpses behind the scenes of a day in the life of a ballet dancer." The narrative further deepens, providing "an intimate, cinematic glimpse into the world of two Royal Ballet dancers, Marianna Tsembenhoi and Francisco Serrano," beautifully capturing the "quiet rituals and electric anticipation that shape their day."
The Reiss design team has meticulously crafted pieces that reflect the balletic influence through various design elements. This includes "graceful silhouettes, fabrics that echo the lightness of a pirouette, and details imbued with the poise and precision of a Royal Ballet performance." Specific design cues powerfully convey the ballet link, such as elegant tutu-inspired tulle skirts, intricate corsetry lacing and boning, and satin ballet shoe-inspired ribbon details. The collection also features luxe jersey pieces, ensuring comfort without compromising on elegance.
The colour palette chosen for the collection further reinforces its balletic roots, featuring an array of muted shades including ballet pink, blush, and ivory. These delicate tones are complemented by deeper hues such as mink, charcoal, and black, providing a sophisticated contrast. Occasional "pops of scarlet" are strategically introduced, serving as a vibrant "reference to the Royal Opera House" itself, adding a touch of dramatic flair.
While the primary focus of the collection is on womenswear, the collaboration also thoughtfully includes smaller, dedicated capsules for men, girls, and boys. The menswear offering features "elevated" pieces like hoodies, T-shirts, and joggers, all subtly adorned with The Royal Ballet logo. For more formal occasions, a distinguished grosgrain tuxedo jacket with coordinating moiré taffeta trousers is available, designed for the kind of elegant attire one might wear when attending a performance. The girls’ collection mirrors some of the women’s designs, notably including a charming layered chiffon, tutu-inspired dress and skirt, allowing younger wearers to embrace the grace of ballet.
