Rouge Noir Gets a Major Makeover: Chanel Launches a Full Beauty Collection

Chanel is embarking on a new chapter with its iconic shade, Rouge Noir, extending its legacy beyond a single nail colour into a full-fledged beauty collection. This marks the first time the brand has created a comprehensive line inspired by one of its most enduringly popular products, originally launched over three decades ago.

The story of Rouge Noir began in 1994, when the uniquely dark, reddish-black shade debuted during Chanel’s autumn/winter ready-to-wear show. It instantly generated buzz, not just for its striking colour but for the impact it had on the fashion world. The shade quickly sold out upon its release and is often credited with sparking a renewed interest in nail enamels after years of paler shades dominating the market.

For many years, Chanel’s best-selling nail colour was the delicate ‘Ballerina’ pink. However, Rouge Noir’s arrival dramatically shifted preferences, becoming a global sensation and gaining further prominence thanks to a notable appearance on Uma Thurman’s nails in the film *Pulp Fiction*. This unexpected popularity cemented its status as a beauty icon.

Now, under the creative direction of Ammy Drammeh, Chanel is reimagining Rouge Noir as a complete collection encompassing eye, lip, and nail products. The colour palette expands beyond the original shade, exploring a spectrum from deep reds and blacks to vibrant magentas, alongside nuanced tones like rose-grey and satiny mauve-brown for the eyes. Lip shades include purplish pink, brick brown, mauve-beige, and, of course, the signature Rouge Noir.

The launch of this expanded collection is being supported by a significant marketing campaign featuring Japanese actress Nana Komatsu. It remains to be seen how this new incarnation of Rouge Noir will perform, but Chanel is clearly investing in its continued success and broadening its appeal to a wider audience.
