Saint Laurent Takes Top Spot as Lyst Index Reveals Major Fashion Shifts

The latest Lyst Index for Q3 has unveiled a dynamic landscape in the fashion industry, with significant shifts across the board. In a quarter where nearly all of the top 20 brands experienced changes in their rankings, Saint Laurent impressively ascended to the number one spot for the very first time. This milestone was primarily driven by a surge in consumer demand for its coveted micro bags, boots, and especially its loafers, with the brand's 'Le Loafer' securing the position of the second-hottest product during the July to September period.

Following closely, the seemingly unstoppable Miu Miu maintained its strong second-place standing, with Lyst attributing its continued success to its ability to capture the current "Zeitgeist" through styles ranging from collegiate codes to the ever-popular ballet-core aesthetic. A standout performer in Q3 was H&M Group’s COS brand, which leapfrogged an impressive four spots to claim the third position globally. This surge was fueled by a remarkable 147% increase in searches, underscoring COS's growing influence as a mass-premium label capable of competing effectively with established luxury design houses. Concurrently, at a markedly different price point but sharing a minimalist design ethos, The Row climbed two places to number four, experiencing a robust 28% growth in demand. Coach also held its ground firmly at number five, benefiting from a substantial 29% quarterly rise in searches.

The remainder of the top 10 saw various movements. Prada slipped two places to number six, while Bottega Veneta advanced two spots to number seven. Loewe, however, experienced a significant drop of six places to number eight, a shift that Lyst suggests occurred in the wake of Jonathan Anderson's departure. Ralph Lauren enjoyed a two-spot rise to number nine, buoyed by the high-profile buzz surrounding Taylor Swift's engagement announcement in a Polo Ralph Lauren striped dress, which itself became the ninth-hottest product of the quarter. Chloé concluded the top 10, moving down two places.

Beyond the top 10, the wider top 20 also presented notable changes. Moncler dropped one spot to 11, moving out of the elite ten, but Versace saw a strong recovery, climbing four places to 12. Both Burberry and Gucci demonstrated continued resurgence, each advancing four spots to numbers 13 and 14 respectively. Skims made a significant entry into the top 20 at number 15, driven by product innovation and an astounding 271% year-on-year increase in demand. However, several brands experienced declines, with Balenciaga falling three places to 16, Jacquemus also down three to 17, and Alaia tumbling six spots to 18. Meanwhile, Stone Island re-entered the top 20 at number 19, showing a 115% quarter-on-quarter rise in searches, reportedly boosted by the 'Oasis reunion tour halo effect'. Valentino also marked its return to the top 20, securing the 20th position.

Lyst also highlighted a trio of "Moving Fast" brands that showcased rapid demand growth, intriguingly not dominated by high-end names this quarter. Nike saw a 7% increase in demand, signaling a potential comeback attributed to its change in CEO and a renewed focus on performance-driven innovation and strategic collaborations. Madewell experienced a 34% surge in demand, riding the wave of a "mall-brand renaissance" as shoppers gravitated towards its slouchy shoulder bags, flats, and jeans. The third brand, Nour Hamour, recorded a 49% increase in demand for its refined, functional leather outerwear, which expertly blends Parisian elegance with a biker-inspired edge.

Regarding the hottest products of Q3, the Havaianas flip-flop surprisingly topped the list with a 34% spike in demand. As previously noted, Saint Laurent’s 'Le Loafer' was the second-hottest product. The COS chunky cashmere sweater, which made a comeback after its previous appearance in Q4 last year, secured third place, while The Row’s 'Eel Loafer' also featured prominently at number four. The Skims Nipple Bra, fueled by considerable publicity and a 69% search spike in August, landed at fifth, proving the brand's adeptness at converting conversation into conversion. Savette’s Slim Symmetry Pocket bag, showcasing the popularity of short, wide bag styles, took sixth place. Nike’s comeback was evident with two sneakers in the top 10: its Jacquemus collaboration Moon Shoe at number seven and the Shox TL at number eight. The Polo Ralph Lauren striped dress was ninth, and Coach’s Soft Empire Carryall 48 completed the list at number 10.

In terms of overarching trends, Lyst identified that "quiet luxury" continues to exert significant influence, clearly demonstrated by the success of COS and The Row. Furthermore, "conviction over reinvention" emerged as a key theme, indicating that brands with a "defined direction and consistent identity" were outperforming those undergoing creative transitions. Lastly, brands like Skims and Coach are exemplifying the power of viral products, showcasing their ability to successfully convert social media buzz into tangible sales and commercial success.
