Salsa Jeans Bets Big on India’s Booming Fashion Market

Portuguese denim brand Salsa Jeans is rapidly expanding its footprint in India, demonstrating strong confidence in the country’s burgeoning fashion market. Just a year after its initial entry, the brand has opened three new stores in key metropolitan areas – Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram – bringing its total store count in India to nine.

This expansion strategically focuses on “high-traffic commercial locations with a premium profile,” according to a company statement, designed to effectively reach a sophisticated, urban consumer base. Salsa Jeans now boasts four locations within Delhi itself: Ambience Mall Vasant Kunj, Pacific Mall, Select Citywalk, and the upscale Khan Market. Further solidifying its presence in the Delhi metropolitan region, the brand also operates two stores in Gurugram (Ireo Grandwalk and Ambience Mall) and one in Noida.

Beyond the Delhi region, Salsa Jeans maintains a presence in major Indian cities with stores located in Mumbai’s Phoenix Palladium and Bengaluru’s Orion Mall. This multi-city approach underlines the brand’s commitment to establishing a nationwide network and capitalizing on India’s diverse consumer landscape.

João Martins, CEO of Salsa Jeans, highlights India’s significant growth potential, stating it’s “one of the world's economies with the greatest growth potential,” anticipating 80 million families will join the middle class by 2030. He emphasizes that this economic shift will translate into a highly dynamic market for the fashion sector, and Salsa Jeans’ consistent growth confirms their faith in both the market and their local partnership.

Salsa Jeans is pursuing a wholesale model for its Indian expansion, collaborating with the Lyskraft Group. This partnership provides the brand with the benefit of a seasoned local operator with deep consumer understanding, facilitating successful market penetration and sustained growth.

Founded in 1994 and fully owned by Sonae since 2020, Salsa Jeans achieved a turnover of €180 million in the 2024 financial year. The brand currently operates in approximately 50 countries worldwide, with India now positioned as a key strategic market for future expansion.
