Sarah Burton Ignites Givenchy Menswear with Punk Icon and Hollywood Star

Sarah Burton has made a significant statement with her debut creative direction for Givenchy menswear, unveiled through the house's latest campaign for Spring 2026. This highly anticipated collection marks the first glimpse of Burton's vision for men's ready-to-wear since her acclaimed women's debut for Givenchy in March of this year. The campaign features an eclectic pairing: The Clash bassist and punk icon Paul Simonon, alongside celebrated American actress Rooney Mara, embodying the brand's revitalized aesthetic.

The striking imagery, captured by cult photographer Collier Schorr, known for her spirited realism, showcases both subjects in meticulously crafted black tailoring. Simonon is styled in a sharp, high-collar men’s shirt, while Mara complements this with a modernist white blouse, a subtle yet significant nod to Givenchy’s foundational design DNA. Mara also stuns in a black lace sheath, exuding modern elegance. Simonon is portrayed as an insouciant seducer, depicted in a razor-sharp wool suit, further softened by the unexpected juxtaposition of cuddling a black Dobermann puppy.

Burton emphasized the personal connection behind her casting choices, stating, "My friends are often my muses, and my muses often become friends. The second in our Portrait Series celebrates this creative relationship with both Rooney Mara and Paul Simonon." This "Portrait Series" concept, featuring personalities photographed by Collier Schorr and expertly styled by Camilla Nickerson, has previously spotlighted an impressive lineup of both current-day and veteran supermodels, including Adut Akech, Vittoria Ceretti, Nyaduola Gabriel, Kaia Gerber, Eva Herzigova, Emeline Hoareau, and Liu Wen.

Burton's tenure at Givenchy follows over a decade of distinguished design leadership at Alexander McQueen. In 2024, she made the pivotal move to Paris, taking the creative reins at Givenchy, an esteemed yet intimately scaled fashion house within the expansive LVMH luxury empire. Her arrival has been met with considerable industry attention and anticipation.

Her initial presentation for Givenchy, a women's ready-to-wear collection staged in March within the house's historic salon at 3, Avenue George V, Paris, was lauded for its astute balance. It presented savvy nods to founder Hubert de Givenchy, exemplified by an opening black fishnet top emblazoned with 'Givenchy 1952,' marking the year of the house's founding. Yet, Burton deftly imbued Hubert’s classic oeuvre with a contemporary edge, incorporating sexy, semi-sheer fabrics and elegantly folded pink and canary yellow leotards with a couture sensibility at the neck.

The new menswear campaign seamlessly extends this directional approach, infusing Givenchy’s timeless elegance with a smart suggestiveness and a distinctly playful tone. Through these initial collections and campaigns, Burton is clearly defining a refreshed and dynamic identity for the iconic French house, blending its storied heritage with a modern, confident allure.
