Schuh's Christmas Campaign Rewrites A Christmas Carol for the Modern Gifter

Fashion footwear giant Schuh has launched its highly anticipated 360-degree Christmas marketing campaign, ‘Past, Present(s), Future’, embracing the festive spirit with a broadcast premiere on major channels from 10 November. Drawing inspiration from Charles Dickens' classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ – a theme also adopted by department store group Fenwick – Schuh delivers its own updated storyline to convey an equally inspiring seasonal message.

Developed in collaboration with creative agency ZAK and under the direction of London-based creative director Henry Dean, the campaign’s core objective is to explore and celebrate "the joy of Christmas gifting at every stage of life." This heartwarming narrative seeks to resonate with audiences by highlighting the diverse experiences and emotions associated with festive generosity.

The campaign's central character, Cazzie, embarks on a profound "journey of rediscovery" after losing her connection to the magic of Christmas. Guided by a "stylish spirit guide" named Marley and a reflective voiceover, the advertisement utilizes "striking point-of-view shots" to vividly capture key moments from her life. Viewers witness the "excitement of receiving gifts as a teenager" from her near past, and then look towards her near future, which beautifully portrays "the joy of perfecting gift-giving for her own children."

Through this rich "lens of nostalgia and transformation," Cazzie ultimately "reconnects with the magic of the present." This reconnection is depicted through vibrant scenes of her trying on "fresh pairs of shoes," celebrating with cherished friends, and enjoying Christmas with her "chosen family," where individuality is embraced, and "everyone is free to be whoever they want to be." The ad concludes with heartwarming vignettes of "laughter, gift-giving, and, naturally, really great shoes," encapsulating the rediscovery of the true essence of Christmas.

The campaign officially kicked off with a 30-second storytelling video distributed across various social channels, with its broadcast premiere on 10 November. This extensive media plan includes major streaming platforms such as ITVX, Channel 4 Streaming, and Sky VOD, alongside premium subscription services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. Additionally, the campaign will reach audiences across YouTube, YouTube Shorts, VEVO, Reddit, and Twitch, ensuring broad digital penetration.

In a strategic move to "step into new territory," Schuh is also engaging in significant podcast sponsorships. This initiative aims to forge connections with Gen Z and family demographics through partnerships with some of the UK’s most popular shows, including ‘Saving Grace’, ‘The Girls Bathroom’, and ‘Parenting Hell’, all of which are recognized within Spotify’s Top 100 rankings. Complementing these efforts, Schuh will activate a comprehensive suite of owned content across social, digital, and physical touchpoints, featuring hero social content, creator-led storytelling, and an impactful out-of-home activation located in Manchester.

Neil Partington, Chief Retail Officer at Schuh, commented on the initiative, stating: “The Past, Present(s), Future campaign is ultimately a celebration of gifting. The campaign adopts the ethos of our ‘Same, But Different' creative platform, championing the message that there is no one way to be this Christmas.” This statement underscores Schuh’s commitment to inclusivity and celebrates the diverse ways people experience and enjoy the festive season.
