Secondhand Fashion Surges Past New As Resale Market Nears $360 Billion

The global market for second-hand fashion and luxury goods is experiencing an unprecedented surge, consistently outperforming the new items market. With an impressive annual growth rate averaging 10%, this sector is expanding three times faster than its brand-new counterpart. A recent report by BCG for Vestiaire Collective highlights this remarkable trajectory, projecting the market to reach an estimated $360 billion by 2030, a significant increase from its current valuation of nearly $220 billion. This shift is clearly reflected in consumer behavior, as pre-owned pieces now constitute almost one-third of the wardrobes of users on platforms like Vestiaire Collective.

A comprehensive survey, conducted by BCG for Vestiaire Collective, gathered insights from 7,800 users across 70 countries to understand the driving forces behind this boom. Price emerged as the primary motivator for second-hand purchases, cited by a substantial 80% of respondents. Beyond cost savings, participants also valued the extensive range of choices and the unique nature of certain items (55%), the excitement of discovering rare finds (50%), and a growing sense of environmental awareness (40%) as key factors influencing their decisions to buy pre-owned.

The report also delved into the motivations of sellers within the Vestiaire Collective ecosystem. The majority, 66% of sellers, indicated that their primary reason for parting with items was to declutter their wardrobes and create additional space. Financial incentives also played a significant role, with 41% mentioning earning money from sales. Furthermore, 44% stated they sold items to fund future purchases, and a more specific 18% used the proceeds to acquire new fashion pieces.

Industry experts are recognizing the transformative power of this market. Felix Krueger, associate director at BCG and co-author of the report, commented, "Second-hand fashion has moved from an experiment to a market that can no longer be ignored." He emphasized that many brands now view it as a crucial channel for attracting new customers. This momentum is further amplified by "resale-native consumers," particularly Generation Z, who are at the forefront of this significant shift, ensuring its continued intensification.

The study also revealed interesting geographical differences, particularly between the European and US markets. Among Generation Z, second-hand items account for 32% of their wardrobes globally. However, the proportion of pre-owned handbags among this demographic shows a notable disparity, reaching 66% in the US compared to 37% in Europe. This distinction extends to overall buying motivations, with US buyers exhibiting a stronger focus on value and the transactional aspect; 87% cite affordability as a main reason for purchasing second-hand, a higher figure than the 76% reported by Vestiaire Collective's European customers.

Vestiaire Collective, a prominent player in this evolving market, was founded in 2009. The platform specializes in premium and luxury fashion resale, establishing itself as a leading destination for pre-owned high-end items. The company has demonstrated significant growth, reporting revenue exceeding €1 billion in 2024. In response to market demands and expanding consumer interest, Vestiaire Collective recently launched a dedicated menswear category, further solidifying its position in the rapidly expanding second-hand luxury sector.
