Shein Pop-Up Dazzles Paris with 50000 Visitors Amidst Legal Storm
The inaugural French Shein boutique, hosted within BHV Paris, has achieved remarkable footfall, attracting over 50,000 visitors since its opening on Wednesday. Frédéric Merlin, President of Société des Grands Magasins (SGM), the owner of BHV, shared this success on Sunday, even as the pop-up store's launch was overshadowed by significant controversy surrounding the Asian e-commerce giant's online platform.
The opening of the physical store sparked a public outcry following revelations that the Shein online platform had been found to sell illicit items, including sex dolls resembling young girls and Category A weapons. While Shein promptly removed all such products from its site, the company has, for now, avoided a direct suspension in France. Nevertheless, it remains under "close surveillance" by the government and is currently facing ongoing legal proceedings regarding its past failings.
Further governmental scrutiny is anticipated, with an update on the situation scheduled for next week at the specific request of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. Demonstrating the gravity of the situation, the Ministry of the Interior officially referred the matter to the Paris Judicial Court on Friday. The stated aim of this legal action is to "put an end to the serious harm to public order caused by Shein's repeated failings," underscoring the government's firm stance on consumer safety and regulatory compliance.
Despite the surrounding scandal, the head of BHV expressed considerable satisfaction with the capsule store's performance. In an Instagram post on Sunday, Frédéric Merlin highlighted the impressive visitor numbers, noting that customers exhibited an "average basket of €45." He also reported positive spillover effects, with "nearly 15% of them went on to shop in other departments" within the venerable department store. Looking ahead, Merlin conveyed aspirations to "expand the capsule with a more comprehensive menswear range, a children's area, a broader range of dresses, and more accessible basics to cater for all lifestyles," indicating confidence in the brand's physical presence.
Shein, founded in China in 2012 and now headquartered in Singapore, chose this prominent Parisian location, directly opposite the Hôtel de Ville, for its first-ever physical store. This strategic move into brick-and-mortar retail in a major European capital represents a significant step for the online fashion behemoth, even as it navigates the complex challenges posed by recent controversies and increased governmental oversight.
