Swiss Watchmakers Turn Trump Tariff Into a Design Statement

Swiss watchmakers are creatively responding to the significant 39% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on goods from Switzerland. Instead of solely grappling with the economic impact, some brands are ingeniously leveraging the situation by launching unique, limited-edition watches that prominently feature the tariff rate on their dials, effectively transforming an obstacle into a distinctive marketing opportunity and a statement piece.

A notable example of this innovative approach comes from Swatch, which recently introduced a special model making a subtle yet direct reference to the tariff. This particular timepiece features a unique dial design where the positions of the 3 and 9 are reversed, serving as a playful nod to the 39% duty Trump initiated on Swiss imports starting August 1. The company's website playfully remarks, "Hopefully, just a limited edition," clearly conveying their wish for the tariff to be a temporary measure.

A Swatch spokesperson characterized the launch as "a positive provocation, a nod to the current situation," further noting that this specific watch is available exclusively in Switzerland. The brand has also committed to immediately halting sales of this watch as soon as the United States alters its customs duties on Switzerland. Reflecting its instant popularity and the topical nature of its design, the watch is already listed as temporarily out of stock on Swatch’s website, with the spokesperson expressing hope that the offer "won’t last long — in fact, as short as possible."

Luxury watchmaker Raymond Weil has also embraced this creative trend, unveiling a limited-edition version of one of its classic models. This exclusive series directly incorporates the "39%" figure onto its dial. Raymond Weil produced an extremely limited run of just 39 pieces, all of which have quickly sold out, underscoring the market's enthusiasm for such unique responses. The brand articulated its underlying philosophy in a statement, asserting that "in Swiss watchmaking, adversity doesn't stop the hands of time," and that "challenges are best faced with creativity."

Raymond Weil's response extended beyond mere aesthetic design, incorporating a unique form of humor into its strategy. Instead of increasing prices to absorb the import tax, chief executive Elie Bernheim humorously informed AFP, "By saying that instead of adding 39 percent to the price, we're going to lower it by 39 percent." This collective ingenuity among Swiss watchmakers is particularly significant given that the 39% tariff is expected to have a considerable impact, as the United States was their primary export market last year.
