Textiss Takes the Helm: French Umbro Operations Shift to Drôme-Based Group
From 2026, sportswear brand Umbro’s French operations will be overseen by Textiss, a Drôme-based group specializing in men’s underwear and licensed apparel. Led by Sylvain Caire, Textiss is known for its Freegun brand, as well as producing licensed products for brands like Pierre Cardin and Von Dutch. This move signifies a significant shift in Umbro’s French licensing strategy, encompassing both footwear and textile categories.
The change comes as Iconix Group, owner of the Umbro brand since its acquisition from Nike in 2012, seeks a long-term partner for managing the brand’s core product lines in France. For the past ten years, the Royer Group held the French license, taking it over in 2016. However, facing recent challenges, the Royer Group and Iconix have agreed to a transition of responsibilities to Textiss, a company already familiar with the Umbro brand as its underwear and socks licensee for the past decade.
Iconix Group characterized the decision as a “natural evolution,” highlighting the existing relationship between Iconix, Royer, and Textiss. The transition will be carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption. Textiss will begin handling orders for the second half of 2026 starting in January 2026, facilitating a smooth handover for customers and partners.
While the financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed, the move positions Textiss to manage key categories for the British sporting goods brand within the French market. Umbro currently has a presence in French football, notably as the kit supplier for Le Havre Athletic Club (HAC). Details regarding the restructuring of teams involved in the license have not been released.
