Thermore: Milan Manufacturer Warms Up to Fashion and Sustainability

Thermore, a Milan-based manufacturer specializing in thermal insulation for apparel, is experiencing significant growth within the fashion industry. Originally focused on technical applications like ski suits, the company has successfully transitioned as fashion increasingly incorporates performance materials. According to CEO Patrizio Lorenzo Siniscalchi, fashion now constitutes the largest portion of Thermore’s business.

Founded in 1972 by Lucio Siniscalchi, Thermore has pioneered the “ingredient brand” model, supplying down-free insulation to a diverse range of fashion and luxury brands. Under the direction of Patrizio Siniscalchi Jr., the company has prioritized strengthening its connection with the end consumer, recognizing their growing demand for quality and sustainability. “When we develop a new insulation product, we don’t think about our direct customer, but about the end user,” Siniscalchi explains.

A recent example of this collaborative approach is Thermore’s partnership with Jaked. The brand’s Autumn/Winter 2025 outerwear collection will feature Thermore’s insulation, specifically utilizing Ecodown Fibers Ocean technology in their Impact Evo jackets. These jackets, designed for racing, fitness, and sportswear, aim to seamlessly blend style with functionality, and are certified by both bluesign and OEKO-TEX.

Currently, Thermore generates an annual revenue of 13 million euros, with the United States and Europe serving as its primary markets. While Asia represents approximately 10% of sales, largely driven by demand in Korea and Japan, the company maintains a presence in the region with offices in both New York and Tokyo. Siniscalchi notes that around 90% of production takes place in the Far East, aligning with the location of most insulated garment manufacturing.

Addressing the concerns surrounding fast fashion, Siniscalchi emphasizes the need for a shift towards more conscious consumption. Thermore actively contributes to this change by exclusively utilizing recycled fibers, specifically those sourced from ocean-bound plastic bottles, to prevent further pollution. The company’s commitment to recycled materials dates back to the 1980s, and today, 98% of their insulation is made from recycled content. Siniscalchi points out that the quality of chips used in PET bottles actually exceeds that of virgin polyester fibers.
