Tissa Fontaneda Secures Investment and New Leadership for Global Expansion
Spanish accessories and ready-to-wear label Tissa Fontaneda, celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, has announced a significant strategic investment and new leadership to spearhead its global expansion. This marks the first time the brand, founded in late 2010 by Tissa (Patricia) Fontaneda, has externally raised capital, signifying a pivotal moment in its evolution.
Entrepreneur Daniel Codes Llamas has joined the company as CEO and a strategic partner, bringing a fresh strategic direction focused on financial structuring, brand scalability, and professionalised management. His proven expertise in transforming design-led businesses into high-value, globally positioned luxury brands is expected to guide Tissa Fontaneda's transition from a heritage atelier to an international luxury house.
Tissa Fontaneda is renowned for its distinctive ‘bubble’ napa leather bags, though its product range also includes other leather bag styles, a curated selection of clothing, eyewear, and jewellery. The brand currently operates a flagship store on Madrid's upscale Claudio Coello street and a smaller boutique on London's Motcomb Street in Chelsea. Additionally, its products are available through wholesale stockists in numerous countries, fostering a loyal customer base across Europe and the Middle East.
The new investment is specifically aimed at accelerating the brand's international presence, with key target markets identified as North America, Japan, the Middle East, and the DACH German-speaking countries of Europe. Codes Llamas will collaborate closely with founder Tissa Fontaneda to build upon her artisanal vision, evolving it into a scalable business model capable of achieving broader international growth.
While the exact investment amount remains undisclosed, the new capital will be strategically allocated across four key pillars: marketing, wholesale, e-commerce, and the professionalisation of operations, which includes fortifying the company’s international supply and retail network. This comprehensive approach is designed to balance creative integrity with strategic expansion.
The wholesale strategy is multifaceted. Broadly, it seeks to enhance the label's footprint in high-potential regions like North America and the Middle East, leveraging its existing presence in 19 countries. More specifically, the brand will enter niche, strategically significant markets such as Japan, where exquisite craftsmanship and artisanal heritage deeply resonate with local consumers. To facilitate this, Tissa Fontaneda has partnered with a leading international wholesale showroom in Italy, establishing a dedicated hub for global buyers to explore collections and curate market-specific selections.
In the digital realm, a newly launched website represents a crucial step in the brand's digital transformation. It aims to thoughtfully blend Tissa Fontaneda’s pre-digital, tactile aesthetic heritage with the demands of a modern, digitally native audience. The company acknowledges that its visual language was shaped prior to the social media era, and this next phase will embrace a comprehensive digital strategy encompassing strengthened e-commerce capabilities, expanded storytelling, and a full-scale social media program across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
The marketing strategy will focus on deepening the sense of community that has long defined Tissa Fontaneda. Designed for women who seek both beautifully crafted pieces and a sense of belonging, the brand’s communication will emphasize emotion, shared aesthetic values, and connection. This new chapter seeks to cultivate a global community of women who choose Tissa Fontaneda pieces because they resonate with their identity, finding joy in the texture, colour, and craftsmanship. By elevating storytelling and expanding brand touchpoints, the brand aims to reinforce the emotional world at the core of its luxury proposition, retaining existing clientele while appealing to younger consumers, including Gen Z.
Daniel Codes Llamas articulates this approach, stating that the new stage "doesn’t change the soul of Tissa Fontaneda, it enhances it." This enduring soul is palpable in the brand's existing stores, including the London location on Motcomb Street, a clean-lined yet welcoming space. Tissa Fontaneda acknowledges the challenges of Motcomb Street not becoming the expected shopping hub but cherishes the area, driving footfall through customer events, particularly among affluent locals and tourists seeking pieces ranging from €300 to €2,000+.
The Madrid store, by contrast, thrives in the heart of a key high-end shopping district, experiencing less footfall concern. Fontaneda noted London's more complex, multi-neighborhood luxury landscape, musing on potential future locations like Mount Street or Elizabeth Street. However, she affirmed Madrid's current boom and appeal to international visitors, highlighting her small but centrally located shop there.
Both boutiques reflect Tissa Fontaneda’s personal touch, mirroring the deep personal commitment she has invested over the past 15 years. With a background in luxury accessories, including stints at Loewe and Swarovski, she has nurtured the brand through a period where competing with industry giants proved demanding. Fontaneda recounted the challenge of standing out in a crowded market, leading her to develop something truly distinct and beloved by customers – the signature bubble leather.
This exclusive material, lambskin sculpted using a special steam technique, is sourced from a single manufacturer with whom Fontaneda has cultivated a long-standing relationship. Initially, even this manufacturer expressed skepticism regarding the complexity and cost of her vision. Her insistence, however, paid off, resulting in a unique and cherished material.
Recognizing the need for external support to elevate the brand further, Fontaneda humorously referenced Yves Saint Laurent’s backer, Pierre Bergé, stating, "I needed a partner in this." Building the brand and establishing its strong foundation was her achievement, but scaling in markets like the US and Japan required specialized assistance. She acknowledged the difficulty in finding the right investor, many of whom are focused on ultra-luxe exclusivity or greater mass production. She emphasized the importance of finding someone who truly understands and appreciates her artisanal vision.
Codes Llamas clearly embodies this understanding. He expressed his belief that "the combination of Tissa’s artistic sensitivity and a modern management approach will allow us to bring the emotive experience of Tissa Fontaneda luxury products to new audiences while keeping its authenticity intact." Tissa Fontaneda is equally optimistic, stating that Danny Codes's arrival "fuses craftsmanship with technology and tradition with genesis, uniting a creative spirit and a financial mindset around one shared mission: taking a beautiful brand to the next level." The industry awaits this exciting new chapter with keen interest.
