Toulouse Celebrates Jean-Charles de Castelbajac's Six Decades of Boundless Imagination

The French city of Toulouse is set to host a monumental retrospective dedicated to the visionary artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Entitled 'L’Imagination au pouvoir' (Imagination at Work), this extensive exhibition will be presented at Les Abattoirs Museum, offering a deep dive into six decades of the creator's groundbreaking work. Scheduled to run from December 12 to August 23, 2026, the event promises to be a significant cultural highlight, celebrating one of France's most iconoclastic figures.

This important compilation transcends conventional boundaries, bringing together nearly 300 works that span fashion, accessories, design, collages, and fine art. De Castelbajac is celebrated for his pioneering spirit in dismantling the traditional barriers between art, fashion, and popular culture. The retrospective meticulously retraces his journey, showcasing an artist whose creative vision has consistently pushed the limits of conventional expression.

Visitors to 'L’Imagination au pouvoir' can expect an immersive journey through de Castelbajac's universe, enriched by an original musical composition by Vladimir Cauchemar. The exhibition prominently features the artist's iconic collaborations, which have spanned an impressive range from artistic giants like Keith Haring and Robert Mapplethorpe to cultural luminaries such as Lady Gaga and Malcolm McLaren. It also highlights his recent, profoundly moving works created for Notre-Dame de Paris, bridging historical reverence with contemporary design.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, now 75, articulates his unique artistic philosophy: "Starting in 1980, I began using the primary colours red, blue, and yellow, the banners of pop culture, as well as logos, cartoons, and slogans, as a contemporary response to my passion for medieval heraldry and history." This distinctive, limited colour palette evolved into his signature, a powerful stylistic imprint connecting all his creative experiences—from early pop knitting and the genesis of streetwear to the sacred art designed for the 1997 World Youth Day and the official vestments for the clergy during the highly anticipated 2024 reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris, examples of which are featured in the retrospective.

Among the many iconic pieces showcased in the exhibition are his world-renowned teddy bear coats from 1988, famously worn by Madonna, and the striking graphic sequined column-dress from 1985 bearing the provocative phrase, "Je suis toute nue en dessous" ("I am fully naked underneath"). The retrospective also includes powerful portraits by Oliviero Toscani featuring Andy Warhol and Vivienne Westwood adorned in de Castelbajac’s creations, alongside historic design objects such as his multi-coloured rainbow moccasins for Weston and his sought-after collector's item Totem lamps, all celebrating the enduring power of his boundless imagination.
