Tu Clothing Drives Sainsbury’s Growth Amid Retail Weakness
Sainsbury’s recent Q3 trading update revealed a mixed performance over the 16 weeks to January 3rd, with a notable bright spot in its Tu clothing division despite a challenging retail environment. The broader market demonstrated weakness, evidenced by sluggish discretionary sales reported by numerous retailers during the festive season.
Overall, Sainsbury’s reported total sales excluding fuel increased by 3.9% in the quarter and 3.3% in the six weeks leading up to January 3rd. Grocery sales were a key driver of this growth, rising 5.4% and 5.1% respectively across the same periods. However, General Merchandise and Clothing combined experienced a decline, falling 1.1% in Q3 and 1% in the six-week period.
Argos also saw a downturn, with sales down 1% for the quarter and a more significant 2.2% drop in the six weeks to January 3rd. Despite these declines in some areas, Sainsbury’s highlighted a “strong performance” from Tu clothing, particularly given the difficult market conditions. The brand achieved “exceptional performance” in Christmas categories, notably with record sales of Christmas pyjamas.
Sainsbury’s stated that Tu’s volume growth outperformed the wider clothing market by a substantial 10 percentage points. This success is attributed to improvements in style and quality perceptions, alongside enhanced product availability both in physical stores and online. However, the update lacked specific sales figures for Tu, leaving it unclear whether the strong performance translated into actual sales growth, or simply a smaller decline than competitors.
The experience at Sainsbury’s mirrors trends seen at Tesco, suggesting potential growth in fashion sales. Tesco reported underwhelming combined Clothing and Home sales, but its Clothing division alone saw a like-for-like sales increase of 4.4%, with fashion consistently outperforming its Home operations. This indicates a broader pattern of resilience within the fashion sector, even amidst wider retail challenges.
