UK firms launch world's first eco friendly reflective pigment

A significant breakthrough in sustainable materials has been achieved by a collaboration of three UK-based businesses, introducing what they claim to be the world's first plastic-free, toxin-free, and fully biodegradable reflective pigment. This innovative material represents a major stride towards environmentally responsible manufacturing and design, offering a clean alternative to conventional reflective pigments that often contain microplastics and harmful chemicals.

This groundbreaking development is the result of the 18-month Innovate UK-funded "Elucent" project, a collaborative effort involving University of Cambridge spin-out Sparxell, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), and global materials science company Pangaia. The project’s mission was explicitly to demonstrate how the synergy of science, engineering, and design could coalesce to forge new, sustainable colour technologies, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in eco-friendly material innovation.

The "Elucent" project has successfully transitioned bio-based pigments from the confines of laboratory research into a state of industrial readiness, marking a pivotal moment for sustainable material development. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of a multi-disciplinary approach, leveraging the unique strengths of each partner to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and practical, large-scale application.

At the core of this innovation is Sparxell’s pioneering cellulose-based colour platform, which forms the foundation of the pigment. Pangaia, with its extensive expertise in design application, took on the crucial role of testing these novel pigments on textiles. Working in collaboration with London-based Orto Print Studio, Pangaia produced printed fabric prototypes and rigorously assessed their durability, effectively demonstrating the real-world applicability of these bio-based colourants within the fashion industry and beyond.

Ensuring the scalability of these pigments was the vital contribution of the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). The MTC was instrumental in moving the production beyond laboratory settings, meticulously building custom production systems and validating their performance at an industrial level. This rigorous process guarantees that the pigments can be manufactured efficiently and consistently at scale, making them viable for widespread commercial adoption.

Looking ahead, the commercial launch of this revolutionary plastic-free, toxin-free, and fully biodegradable reflective pigment is projected for 2026. This eagerly anticipated release is set to open new avenues for sustainable product development across various sectors, offering a genuinely environmentally friendly solution for reflective applications and underscoring the potential for collaborative innovation to drive a more sustainable future.
