UK Retail Footfall Steady in August Ahead of Golden Quarter Push

UK retail footfall remained largely consistent in August, showing a steady performance as the industry strategically positions itself for the eagerly anticipated Golden Quarter. Overall, footfall across all destinations experienced a modest rise of just 0.3% year-on-year last month, a positive indicator driven primarily by the robust activity seen on high streets.

Digging deeper into the year-on-year figures, high streets emerged as the primary catalyst for growth, recording a significant 0.8% uplift in visits. Shopping centres also observed a marginal increase, with footfall rising by 0.1%. In contrast, retail parks experienced a slight downturn, seeing a 0.9% dip compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data released by MRI Software.

When comparing August's performance to the preceding month of July, the overall retail footfall registered a slight decrease of 0.6%. This marginal dip was predominantly influenced by a 1.6% drop in high street visits. Interestingly, both retail parks and shopping centres bucked this trend month-on-month, recording modest gains of 0.1% and 0.8% respectively, suggesting a shift in consumer activity patterns during the latter part of summer.

Despite the slight month-on-month reduction, several external factors contributed positively to August's footfall. The extended school holidays, coupled with a vibrant summer filled with sports and various events, provided a notable boost. This impact was particularly pronounced in cities outside London, which saw an impressive year-on-year footfall increase of 6.4%, significantly outperforming Central London's 1.6% rise. Furthermore, coastal towns benefited from a strong domestic tourism trend, enjoying a substantial 9.5% monthly uplift, largely supported by the prolonged fine summer weather.

MRI Software commented on these findings, stating that August's results underscore the inherent resilience within retail stores and destinations across the UK. Despite the prevailing weak economic climate, footfall continues to stabilise, with high streets demonstrating their enduring strength not just as shopping hubs but also as attractive destinations for leisure and social gatherings during the school holidays. MRI highlighted that the school break remains a crucial driver for footfall, but acknowledged the ongoing challenge of transforming this seasonal traffic into sustained momentum as the industry transitions into autumn.

Reflecting on the broader sentiment, MRI noted that overall retail sentiment remains cautious. Their 'Insights from the Inside' survey revealed that a significant 70% of store managers attributed increased in-store activity this summer to the school holidays. However, a considerable 55% of these managers anticipate September sales to fall below last year's figures, indicating a potential tightening of consumer spending in the lead-up to the crucial Golden Quarter.

As the retail sector prepares for autumn trading and the upcoming Golden Quarter, strategic preparation is paramount. MRI advises that retail leaders who prioritise enhancing the experiential factor for customers, effectively leverage local events to draw visitors, and possess the agility to adapt swiftly while benefiting from data-driven insights will be best positioned to capture both footfall and consumer spend during this vital trading period.
