UK Retail Sees Strong Rebound with High Streets Leading the Charge
UK retail destinations experienced a significant uplift in footfall last week, from September 21st to 27th, marking a "strong rebound" both on a week-on-week and year-on-year basis, according to data from specialist tracker MRI Software. Overall visits across the UK surged by 5.4% compared to the preceding week. This impressive growth was primarily spearheaded by high street activity, which saw a robust 7.7% increase. Certain days proved particularly strong for high streets, with Sunday registering a remarkable 22.3% rise, Wednesday an 10.8% increase, and Saturday climbing by 12.4%. This heightened activity is largely attributed to the back-to-university period, as students prepared for the new academic term. The impact was also evident regionally, with cities outside London seeing a 9.4% week-on-week uplift, while market and historic towns noted increases of 8% and 6.2% respectively.
While high streets led the charge, other retail formats also reported modest but steady increases week-on-week. Retail parks experienced a 2.5% rise in visits, and shopping centres saw a 3.6% boost. Both destination types demonstrated consistent daily increases, with shopping centres mirroring high street trends by peaking on Sunday (+6.8%), Thursday (+3.8%), and Saturday (+6.9%). The strong finish to the week for these locations is believed to be linked to the payday weekend, which likely encouraged shoppers to begin their preparations for Halloween and the impending festive season. This early momentum suggests that the countdown to the crucial "Golden Quarter" for retailers is now well underway.
Looking at the year-on-year figures, UK retail destinations collectively registered a 4.4% increase in visits. This positive comparison is largely attributed to more favourable weather conditions this year, in contrast to the heavy rain and floods that dampened consumer appetite for shopping during the same period a year ago. High streets once again emerged as the top performer, recording a 5.8% increase in annual activity. Retail parks also saw a healthy 4.2% rise, while shopping centres experienced a 1.9% uplift in year-on-year footfall.
Central London notably enjoyed a strong 8.3% increase in annual visits. This significant boost in the capital was particularly driven by heightened activity on Thursday and Friday, which averaged a substantial 13.2% increase. This surge is likely a reflection of an increased number of events taking place across London, including the final dates of major attractions such as the Oasis tour. The robust performance during the final week of September has generated considerable optimism among retailers, fostering hopes that October will continue this positive trajectory for the sector.
