UK Shoppers Splash Out £3.8 Billion in Black Friday Cyber Monday Bonanza
British consumers demonstrated robust online engagement during the recent Black Friday to Cyber Monday sales period, collectively spending an impressive £3.8 billion ($5.0 billion). This figure, reported by Adobe Analytics, represents a significant year-on-year increase of 4.6%, highlighting the enduring appeal of these key shopping days for UK shoppers.
The data further revealed the top-performing product categories that captured consumers' attention over the four-day event. Jewellery, video games, toys, electronics, personal care products, sporting goods, and apparel emerged as the most sought-after items. Across the diverse range of retail offerings, the average discount available to shoppers stood at 16.7%. For those hunting for bigger bargains, computers, televisions, and apparel offered the most substantial price reductions.
In a separate observation, the British Retail Consortium (BRC), representing major UK retailers, noted a trend of Black Friday deals commencing earlier than in previous years. Retailers are now looking ahead with cautious optimism, hoping that consumer confidence will experience a rebound during the crucial Christmas trading period, especially with the recent uncertainty surrounding last week's tax-raising budget now resolved.
Providing a broader context to the global shopping phenomenon, Adobe also projected that US shoppers were expected to spend nearly $44 billion over the extended five-day period, which included Thanksgiving, underscoring the massive scale of these sales events across the Atlantic.
