Uniqlo Founder Warns US Tariffs Could Bankrupt the World

Tadashi Yanai, the visionary founder of the global fashion giant Uniqlo and chief executive of its parent company Fast Retailing, recently voiced profound concerns regarding the escalating impact of U.S. tariffs on global trade. Speaking on Monday, Yanai, who also holds the title of Japan's richest man, asserted that the United States itself stands to bear the most significant brunt of these economic measures.

Yanai reiterated his long-held apprehension about the potential economic fallout from the wide-ranging tariffs imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. His latest comments were made on the sidelines of a Uniqlo event in New York City, where the brand was showcasing its innovative LifeWear clothing collection and an art collaboration with Japan's Toray Industries and The Museum of Modern Art. Through a translator, Yanai expressed a stark warning: "I'm afraid the world could (go) bankrupt. America is the one that could suffer the most."

As an apparel powerhouse, Fast Retailing commands a significant presence across Asia and is actively pursuing an aggressive growth strategy in key markets such as Europe and North America. This ambitious expansion makes the company particularly sensitive to international trade policies and their financial implications.

In July, Uniqlo's parent company had already indicated that heightened U.S. tariffs would begin to substantially impact its American operations later in the current year. To counteract this anticipated financial strain, the company has plans to implement price increases. A majority of Uniqlo products sold within the U.S. market are sourced and manufactured in various countries across Southeast Asia and South Asia, highlighting the intricate global supply chains affected by these tariffs.
