URW Appoints Vincent Rouget New Chairman in Leadership Shuffle

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), the prominent French shopping-centre giant, has announced a significant leadership transition, appointing Vincent Rouget as the new Chairman of its Management Board. Rouget, currently the managing director of European operations, is set to take the helm of the CAC 40-listed company on January 1, 2026, succeeding Jean-Marie Tritant. Tritant, who has spearheaded the group's turnaround efforts over the past five years, will depart at the end of the current year following a transition period.

Vincent Rouget, 45, joined URW in 2023 as managing director for strategy and investment, where he played a crucial role in shaping the company's 2025-2028 roadmap. Prior to his tenure at URW, he spent over 15 years at Aermont Capital, a pan-European real estate private equity firm, where he worked under Léon Bressler, who is a former CEO of Unibail.

This leadership change, described by the property company as a "succession plan" that was already in progress, has been accelerated by the supervisory board. Jacques Richier, Chairman of URW's Supervisory Board, stated that "Today's announcement reflects our proactive approach to succession, the Group's solid performance and the positive trajectory embarked upon as part of the roadmap" drawn up by Jean-Marie Tritant. Richier further commended Tritant for his leadership during a "critical time" to transform the Group and reignite its growth in a particularly challenging external environment.

Jean-Marie Tritant was appointed Chairman of the Management Board at the end of 2020, following a period of intense difficulty for URW. Burdened by debt from its 2019 Westfield acquisition and severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic which led to widespread shopping centre closures, the group's share price had plummeted to an all-time low. This precarious situation led to a shareholder revolt, orchestrated by Léon Bressler, a former CEO of Unibail (1992-2006), and French businessman Xavier Niel, which ultimately led to the previous management's ousting and Tritant's appointment.

Xavier Niel, a member of URW's supervisory board, expressed his "gratitude and appreciation to Jean-Marie Tritant for his commitment to URW." He highlighted Tritant's decision to return to France from managing the group's US activities to lead URW "in the midst of a storm," crediting him with creating "the conditions for a solid and lasting turnaround." Under Tritant's leadership, URW has significantly reduced its debt, divested less promising US assets, and projects profitability growth of approximately 6% through to 2028. Tritant himself affirmed his "full confidence in URW's ability to generate future growth under the leadership of Vincent and the management board," building on the strategic transformation achieved during his tenure.

Tritant, 58, has a long history with Unibail, having joined the company in 1997. He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming managing director for shopping centres and offices in France in 2012, chief operating officer in 2013, and president of URW in the United States in 2018. A self-professed disciple of Léon Bressler, Tritant has openly acknowledged Bressler's pivotal role in recruiting him, promoting him within the shopping centre division, sending him to the US, and ultimately asking him to assume the chairmanship of the Management Board.

Concurrently with the leadership announcement, URW, which also operates convention centres and is the developer behind the Triangle Tower in Paris, reported robust financial results for the first nine months of the year. The group saw a 2.4% increase in gross rental income from its shopping centres compared to the same period in 2024. Retailer sales across URW's centres rose by 3.4%, and footfall increased by 1.8%. Further demonstrating its strategic growth, the group also announced the acquisition of a 25% stake in the Saint James Quarter shopping centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, recognized by URW as one of Europe's top twenty most visited retail destinations.
